** Task - When You Can't Sleep At Night **

The last thing I remembered was getting my hands on that god damned sword. Yet, as I close and open my hands – there is nothing. No sword. I was sitting in the bookstore now, back with my fellow allies – Alex, Tove and Drew – as well as my best friend, Murphy. Rubbing my eyes, I sat up slowly. Murphy noticed me first, he waved a hello. I gave him a weak smile. Every part of my body was aching and the memories of the dead swam back to me. That blood would stain. Drew and Tove were talking in hushed voices – I suspected they were planning on breaking away from our group. I had to keep an eye on them. Alex – who was normally found asleep – had his nose stuck in a picture book. His lips were making silent words as he read. His blonde hair fell over one eye. I had a quick drink before heading over to him.
“Hey,” I smiled. He looked up from the book – which was called ‘A day in Wonderland’.
“Hi,” he snapped the book shut silently and quickly. I still caught a glimpse of the page. It was a spin-off of Alice in Wonderland. I noticed his cheeks go slightly red, “Just got bored,” he said casually as he replaced the book back into the shelf.
“It’s ok,” I said, “I won’t tell anyone. But between you and me, Murphy used to love the ‘Powerpuff Girls’ comics,”
“Really?” he raised an eyebrow,
“Yep. That was actually when I first met him, he wasn’t deaf back then,” I said, I could just hear the sound of his voice thinking about it. He had such a beautiful voice but barely talked to anyone else but me. Murphy was very shy most the time.
“Well, I’m starving. Want something?” I asked him. I hated when I got caught up in my daydreams,
“Sounds good!” he got up quickly. I would never understand boys and their food – especially the ones who read children’s books. I lead the way to the backpack full of food.
“Want a snack bar?” I signed to Murphy. He nodded in reply. I grabbed out some four bars, passing one to Murphy and then going over to Tove and Drew.
“…..you think it’s possible for vampires-warlocks to be friends with…” Drew stopped as I sat down – forming a triangle almost. This dude just kept getting weirder and weirder. First aliens now other supernatural beings – I was surprised to see Tove listening contently.
“Is this the secret club over here?” I said jokingly,
“No!” Drew replied. He seemed a little flustered. “Have you ever met a witch? Or a vampire? Or a-“
“Have you been taking blue pills or something?” I cut him off. My earlier thoughts came back to me. I thought they were planning on ditching our alliance but here they are talking about – there’s only one word for it – nonsense.
“Did you make some then give them to me?” he said seriously. I tried not to punch him in the face.
“I give up,” I groaned, handing him the bar then giving one to Tove.
“Thanks.” she said quietly. It was one of those moments where she wasn’t talking to herself or curled up in fetal position rocking back and forth. I wonder how long she’ll go like this. I walked back to Murphy but before I sat down, I noticed a familiar wrapping.
Cadbury Dairy Milk Chocolate.
My favourite! It was untouched as it lay there. I darted out of the store and grabbed it and ran back in quickly. I cradled it like it was the last piece on Earth. Our other supply of chocolate had disappeared mysteriously – but I guess Drew didn’t realise he had brown stuff on the corner of his mouth (at least I hope it was chocolate…). Drew’s eyes went wide.
“I told you she was a dark witch. Where else would she get the chocolate?” he thought he whispered. It sounded ten times louder though. I rolled my eyes.
“So you don’t want chocolate,” I replied to him, tearing the package open and breaking off bits.
“Being a dark witch is pretty cool…..” he said, and then added quietly, “If we stay on her good side she won’t roast on a spit,” It made Tove nod seriously. I think they may have had a thing for each other. I wouldn’t know – I didn’t get to see them in the ‘Capture the Weapon’. I had way too many suspicions about him. He is definitely meant to be in a mental asylum – or maybe high security jail – I haven’t quite figured out which one to put him in.
“You’re walking on thin ice, Griffin!” I snarled at him. He was doing my head in. I was considering using those karate lessons - that Maxine gave me – a real workout. I took a bite of chocolate to calm myself. It didn’t taste like it usually did – it had a zingy taste. In the center of the chocolate was a liquid. I’ve read a ton of books and knew what that meant. We had just been poisoned. It was probably Kyros – the guy who seemed to enjoy pissing me off. I looked around and saw everyone flop onto the ground beneath us. I tried to lower myself down but the entire world was swaying side to side. I managed to rest myself on Murphy’s body just before the black overcame my body.

I sat up. I was on my bed. Was this real? Had we been set free? I jumped eagerly off my bed and ran into the living room. Murphy and my father sat there. And – you’ll never guess who – Maxine! I ran up to her first and gave her a huge hug. Then I turned to my father and my best friend. Their eyes were a deep red colour – normally my father’s eyes were sea green and Murphy’s eyes were a mixture of grey and blue. I took a step back.
“What’s the matter dear?” my Dad asked, standing up from the couch.
“Nothing, don’t worry about it. Just, I left something in my room,” I said hurriedly and rushed back to room but stopped shortly and turned back, “Stay right there, I’ll be back in a moment,” I added and ran to my room. I closed the door behind me and put my desk chair under the door knob. What was wrong with everyone? A knock on the door startled me. I let out a small squeal.
“You alright, Rosie?” my Dad asked through the door. No one ever called me ‘Rosie’.
“Yep, be out in a second,” I said. I was furious that my window would open. It made a slight rattled sound and squeaked as it opened.
“What are you doing, Rosie?” my Dad said. His voice sounded too soft and calm for my liking. I felt as if I was trapped in a horror movie. It’s at the part where my family has turned in zombies and now they want to maul my body. “Why can’t I open the door?” the door knob twisted and rattled.
“Get away from me!” I shouted. I desperately searched for a weapon, I settled on a huge swimming trophy I won last year. I looked out my window and spotted Murphy. He snarled at me and leaped from the ground. I slammed my window shut as he smacked into it. I screamed as the blood poured from his nose but he didn’t seem to care. He smashed his fist against the glass and I could hear my father barging the door. It was torture. The two people that I loved most wanted to kill me. Four people all burst in at once. All my walls had been breached. Mum and Maxine were on the far wall, my Dad – with part the door on him – was to my left and Murphy – who had glass through his hair – was to my right. They had a crazed look in their eyes.
“Get away from me!” I screamed, holding my trophy out. They continued to lick their lips as if I were prey to them.
“Don’t you love us anymore?” Maxine’s voice was soft and musical. It made the hairs on my neck tingle. I refused to answer but they took another step closer. There was no escape. I was dead. Just as dead as I was in that stupid Mall.
“Are you going to answer, Rosie?” Murphy said in the same eerie voice. Murphy’s is deaf. How could he know what Max said? This can’t be real. I never got out of that Mall. No one did.
“You’re not real!” I shouted at them,
“Don’t you want to see us?” my mother replied,
“Go away!” I shouted, “You’re not real!” I repeated it over and over in my head. This wasn’t real. It can’t be real. The came closer and closer.
“You! Are not! Real!” I screamed louder. I fell backwards in an attempt to get further away from them but I kept falling. I shut my eyes and saw an image. Murphy was stabbing Maxine. I opened my eyes to see that I was falling in the pitch black and there was no way out.

I sat up way too fast and I was breathing quickly. I looked around. Drew, Tove and Alex were still asleep. Tove was tossing a rolling around. Drew was batting away at invisible demons. Alex was punching the wall. Murphy looked at me curiously. I screamed in fright.
“Get away from me, Murphy!” I shouted, scampering away from him. He flinched a little bit. I couldn’t tell what colour his eyes were anymore. I didn’t care. He killed Maxine! His face had a pained expression.
“What’s wrong, Rose?” he signed, “Did I do something?”
“Just stay away from me!” I hissed the last bit – “Murderer!” I got up and ran to the storage room and locked the door. I huddled in the corner of the room. I began to cry. How could I live? Murphy had looked so pain when I shouted. But how could I tell what was real and what wasn’t?
