The Sorting

The doors swung inwards to reveal a tall, black-haired witch, wearing emerald green robes and a pointy wizards hat in the same colour. This woman had a 'Do Not Cross Me Or You'll Regret It' type of face with an air of authority about it. Y/N and Hermione knew who this was immediately since her picture is in Hogwarts: A History under the section 'Deputy Headmasters/mistresses'.

"The firs' years, Professor McGonagall" Hagrid happily introduced, bowing slightly.

"Thank you Hagrid. I shall take them from here," McGonagall spoke. "Follow me." She pushed her hands together as if she was about to sing 'Big Box, Little Box', gesturing for the students to form a single file line.

McGonagall led the students through the Entrance Hall and past a large mahogany door. The room through those doors was bursting with lively chatter and Y/N suspected that the rest of the school were there waiting. The professor veered them away from the hall, however and took the group inside an empty chamber off to the right. It was small for a group of their size but McGonagall swiftly flicked her wand and the room embiggened to fit the first years.

"Welcome to Hogwarts," Professor McGonagall said dramatically,  "The start of term banquet will begin momentarily, but before you take your seats in the Great Hall, you will be sorted into your houses. The sorting is a very important ceremony because, while you are here, your house will be something like your family within Hogwarts. You will have classes with the rest of your house, sleep in your house dormitory and spend free time in your house common room."

"The four houses are called Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw and Slytherin." she continued. "Each house has it's own noble history and each has produced outstanding witches and wizards. While you are at Hogwarts, your triumphs will earn you house points, while any rule breaking will lose house points. At the end of the year, the house with the most points is awarded the House Cup, a great honour. I hope each of you will be a credit to whichever house becomes yours."

"The sorting ceremony will take place in a few minutes in front of the rest of the school as well as the Headmaster. I suggest you all smarten yourselves up as much as you can while you are waiting." McGonagall finished her speech while directing her eyes at Neville's shabby looking cloak, and Ron's dirt ridden nose.

Y/N tried desperately to flatten out any lumps in his robes or remove any chocolate stains from his fingers, while Hermione started looking around nervously, wringing her hands together in front of her.

"You've got a strand of hair - no there..." Y/N said to Hermione as she tried desperately to rid herself of her loose hair. "Here..." Y/N reached and carefully took the hair away from her face.

"Thanks," Hermione said while blushing and wringing her hands even more furiously.

"I shall return when we are ready for you," said Professor McGonagall. "Please wait quietly." With that, she left the small chamber, and as she left, the room returned to it's original size squishing the first years together in an uncomfortable fashion. Hermione gulped ominously next to Y/N's ear as she squished against his arm.

"How exactly do they sort us into houses?" came Harry's voice from somewhere in the room. Y/N moved towards the sound pulling Hermione through the crowd with him.

"Some sort of test, I think. Fred said it hurts a lot, but I think he was joking." Ron told Harry. Y/N and Hermione turned to face each other, eyes wide. 'Test?' Not one book he or Hermione had read had said anything about a test, only that students were sorted into houses on first arrival.

Hermione and Y/N began testing each other on spells they had read about in the required book list, while Harry and Ron stood around looking terrified at the thought of a test on the first day of school. Then something happened which made Hermione squeal and stumble back into Y/N's arms. Y/N went bright red, but luckily, Hermione was focused on the new arrivals in the room...
