It had been months since Sid had left and Rose and Eugene had spent every day together. Rose was sitting on a blanket looking up at the sky waiting for Eugene to come, Rose was looking up at the clouds when she heard footsteps coming towards her. Rose looked up and smiled when she saw Eugene coming towards her but her smile soon faded when he saw the look on her friend's face, silence filled the air as Eugene sat down next to Rose and began to pick at the grass. Rose stared at her friend knowing deep down what he was about to say but not wanting to believe it. Eugene looked at Rose, "the heart murmur's gone," Rose looked down at her hands holding the tears back, "I'm gonna enlist to be a marine." Rose nodded still looking at her hands.

The pair sat there silently before Eugene looked at Rose, he gently placed his fingers under her chin and lifted her head, "I won't be long, people are saying the war will be over soon and I will be able to see Sid once I've finished training."

A tear slowly fell down Rose's cheek which was quickly caught by Eugene's thumb, he stared into her eyes as he slowly rubbed the tears away. Eugene slowly began to lean in and whispered, "everything will be alright." Rose stared back into Eugene's eyes, and they slowly started to lean in more until their lips finally met in a sweet and gentle kiss.

When the pair finally pulled away they stayed staring into each other's eyes, "please be safe," was the first thing Rose said after the kiss, Eugene nodded and wrapped his arms around Rose in a hug. Rose hugged Eugene back before pulling away and smiling at him, "I guess I'm gonna have to look after myself now," she laughed slightly showing Eugene that she was joking, Eugene thought back to sid leaving and he knew that it would be hard for Rose seeing him go.

Later that evening the Sledge family and Rose were at the train station seeing Eugene off to his training. Dr and Mrs Sledge said goodbye and then they walked to the side to leave Rose to her goodbye.

Rose and Eugene hugged tightly and when they pulled away, Rose grabbed her bag and reached inside, "I got you this, I know that the marines said no pictures and stuff but you could use it in boot camp and..." Rose was cut off my Eugene pulling her into another hug. The pair pulled away from each other and then stared at each other both with tears in their eyes, Rose quickly leaned in and pressed her lips to his in quick lips that were cut short by the train horn. Eugene smiled at Rose before entering the train it took Eugene into his new life.

Meanwhile, on the train, Eugene looked at the Bible Rose had given him, it was small and compact, and the brown leather was worn and slightly torn in the corner. Eugene opened the Holy book and a picture fell out of the pages and landed on his lap. It was a picture that had been taken in school, Eugene stood behind Rose with his arms wrapped around her, and Sid stood next to them leaning on the pair as they all smiled at the camera that Rose's Mother had held.
