You are a scientist conducting a team of more than 20 other scientists who come to Blackwood Mountain after the events of a group of kids that almost died up there come to surface. You are well aware that one of the kids, the only remaining child of the Washington family, the owners of the lodge where the trip took place, mysteriously dissapeared on the mountain. After a lot of research and after talking to some of the teenagers that survived the trip, you find out that Josh might be alive under the form of the Wendigo creature and you decide to save him.

As two of your man take the huge glass and metal box into the room you stare at the creature inside it. It's tall, slim, with really long claws and gray skin. You know that they can't see well, but they can hear and smell better than any human or animal on this planet. They also attack viciously, leaving you no chance to escape and they devour their pray in an animalistic way.
"Is it okay if we drop it here, miss?" one of the men asks you.
"Yeah, yeah, Johnny, that's fine. Go take a break, you deserve it" you answer, smiling at them.
Even though you're just a kid yourself, only 20 years old, your team respects you. You are basically a genius, you work with some of the most intelligent people around the world, you finished college way before the others, when you were 19.
You grab a photo from your pocket while the Wendigo screeches in anger and confusion. The photo of Josh Washington takes your breath away. You hold it up, next to the creature and you try to compare them.
"What the hell happened to you, Josh?" you whisper, shocked by the difference.
The creature looks nothing like Josh, but you know you got the right Wendigo. You have no idea how you can know that, since Josh didn't have any distinctive marks before he turned, like a scar, a mole or a tattoo. But you can feel it's him.
He hears you and turns around to smash his fists on the glass, screaming at you. His reaction intrigues you. Could it be that he actually recognized his name? How long has it been since someone called him by his name? It's been more than six months since the kids were rescued from the mountain. He was alone in that cave for a long time, feeding on any poor hiker or ranger that ended up in the cave by mistake.
You come closer to the cage, but you pay attention not to get too close though. You stare at the Wendigo and you swear you can see a glimpse of despair in his eyes, but then he screeches again and starts running around the cage, annoyed.
"I promise you I'll heal you, Josh" you whisper again, holding out your hand to touch the glass.
The door opens and one of your teammates comes in, scaring the shit out of you and causing you to jump away from the cage.
"Y/n, I don't think it's a good idea to stay that close to the cage. It's still an animal" Alice says.
Alice is one of your best scientists and biologists in the team and also a really good friend. Maybe your only friend...
"He's not an animal, it's the kid. Josh, we found him" you fidget around your table, grabbing papers and dropping the photo of Josh.
Alice picks it up and looks at it, confused.
"I won't even ask where you got this from..." she says, but you interrupt her.
"From Sam, his best friend. She is really worried about him"
"But I'm pretty sure they're nothing alike, Y/n" Alice continues. "Are you sure you want to get yourself into this? This is way beyond what we know and prepared for. It's beyond everything that science knows at this moment. I'm not even sure it's even science anymore.."
You stare at her, annoyed by her comment. She knows damn well that you never back down on a promise and you promised the Washingtons and Sam that you'll find and try to save Josh. And you promised Josh, but Alice doesn't need to know that.
"All I'm trying to say is that it isn't too late to call it off. No one's forcing you to do this" Alice tries to explain.
"I know that this is Josh, Alice. I can't explain it, but there's a feeling in my throat that tells me this is him. It's suffocating me. I know you say no one's forcing me, but I do feel like this is my duty now and I have to do my best to help him" you speak slowly and clearly. "If you don't want to do this, you can go back home, I won't stop you."
She nods, then gives you the photo back, telling you that there's food in the kitchen, if you're hungry.
You watch her as she leaves the lab, then you turn around to look at the Wendigo again. He's sitting on the ground now, on his knees, breathing unsteadily.
You take your notebook and take a few notes regarding the Wendigo's appearance and behaviour. You put the notebook back on the table when your stomach starts to growl.
"I can't work if I'm hungry" you sigh, getting ready to go in the kitchen.
You take one more look at the creature, just to see it looking at you, seemingly sad.
"You must be starving too" you say, stopping from your way.
The Wendigo sits up, coming closer to the glass.
"I'm sorry, but no human flesh for you, buddy" you say, but then smile when you realize something. "But this might just be the perfect way to begin our first test!" You laugh, running in the kitchen.
