Josh Washington - Part 2

You ignore Alice and your other teammates as they question your excitement and you open the fridge looking for some meat. You find some steak and before you run back into the lab you grab an apple for yourself.
"Do not interupt me!" you yell at everyone, before closing the door behind you.
You don't want anyone to come in and scare the Wendigo. You need to gain his trust, to treat him like a human being if you want to get to his human side, if there is such thing left in him.
Coming closer to the cage, you see the Wendigo sniffing around to understand what you're doing.
"There's no way I'm getting you human flesh to eat, but steak is meat too. It should be good enough, I hope" you say as you open a little "widow" on the box to give the creature the steak.
He grabs it violently and you squeak like a little mouse, getting scared by his sudden move. You quickly close the little slot, moving further from the glass cage. You watch the creature, paying attention to everything he does. He smells the steak, but then he throws it away, annoyed. He screeches at you again and you sigh, sitting on the floor next to the cage.
"Buddy, you gotta eat something. We won't be able to give you human flesh. You have to get used to animal meat. Just give it taste..." you tell him.
You're actually worried for him and his health. If you want to get him back, you need to keep him in a good physical form, he needs to be healthy.
Then the Wendigo does something you didn't expect. He picks up the steak again, looks at you, and takes a bite of it. Then a second one. And a third one. And he keeps eating.
Your eyes widen in shock and you start screaming happily.
"Did you actually understand me?" You ask him. Of course he doesn't answer and he actually ignores you, but you know he did understand you.
You grab your notebook and you write: "the subject understands humans when they communicate with him and acts according to what he was just told". You close the notebook and take the apple from the table, sitting on the floor again.
You take a bite of the apple and you think that maybe it would be useful if you talked to the Wendigo as to a normal human being. As if you talked to Josh. Maybe it will bring back memories or feelings.
"My name is Y/n Y/l/n, Josh. I'm a scientist..." you wait for any kind of reaction from him.
"I talked to your friends" you suddenly say, causing the Wendigo to stop eating. "You know... Mike, Ashley, Chris... Sam" you mention Sam's name the last deliberately, thinking that maybe it would make something snap into his mind.
Nothing snaps. He looks just as annoyed and confused as before. He continues to eat, but you don't give up.
"They were the only ones who agreed to talk to me. The others were either too hurt, or too shocked to talk to anyone" you add, still analyzing his every move. "They were really worried about you and your behaviour that night. They told me you went completely crazy."
You can actually visualize each one of them at the table, talking to you, telling you what happened.

~ Flashback to the discussions Y/n had with Mike, Chris, Ashley and Sam ~
"He was nuts" Mike yells.
"Why do you think that?" you ask, politely.
Mike looks at you as if you were retarded.
"He pulled this stupid prank on us, scared the shit out of us, just because he wanted revenge. And he was talking like a crazy person. Nothing of what he said made any fucking sense."
You put your hands on the table, trying to not let yourself get too affected by what you hear.
"Mike, from what I was told, Josh was sick and he hadn't been taking his meds for a while..." you explain.
He looks at the floor, not saying another word.

"I knew he had problems. I just thought it was because of Hannah and Beth, you know... Their death really affected him" Chris speaks, looking at the table.
"Do you know his real diagnosis?" you ask, even though you already know the answer. The Washingtons told you.
"We found a folder on the mountain that said something about schizophrenia..." he admits.
You sigh, relieved that he knows.
"He was given the wrong medicine, Chris. And after his sisters died, he stopped taking even those ones" you explain.
-
"He was laughing with no reason, talking to himself" Ashley explains.
"He was sick. He was seeing stuff, most probably" you add.
Ashley closes her eyes and holds her head in her hands.
"He was scary as hell, but we were his friends. We were suppossed to stick with him..."

"I don't think he meant to hurt us. He was just hurt, lost, alone. He wanted us to feel what Hannah and Beth felt that night, before they died" Sam says.
"Were you scared of him after you found out that he was the 'serial killer' that chased you around all night?" you ask.
She looks at you, tears in her eyes.
"I was only scared for him. I just wish I realized sooner that he wasn't okay. Maybe I could have helped him and none of this would have happened. He was sick, he was getting lost in his own mind, and I ignored him" she tells you, sobbing.

~Flashback ended~
"They care about you, Josh. And they miss you. All of them" you tell him.
That little glimpse of humanity in his eyes is back and your heart pounds at an unhealthy rate.
But then it's gone again when the door smashes open and Alice walks in with a few other scientists.
"You want some candles to help you with your romantic dinner?" Alice asks sarcastically.
The Wendigo screeches and screams, scared.
"Fuck this, Alice! I was getting to him!" you yell, scaring the other scientists, but not Alice.
She comes closer to you, grabbing your arms and pulling you to your feet.
"Getting to him? How the hell were you getting to him? It's a monster, Y/n, not a depressed teenager!" she screams at you. "This thing has been here for three hours and you already went crazy over it. You know damn well that there is nothing you can do about it. The Washington kid is gone, face it already!"
You jerk away from her, anger taking over you.
"This is my project! If you do not accept my rules and my way of working, you are all free to return home. I have not chosen any of you because I like you or because we're friends. I wanted to work with you because you all are some of the best out there at your speciality, but I won't accept any of you telling me what to do or how to do my work" you yell, looking at all of them then you turn and look right at Alice. "So Alice, just how I told you before, I am going to save this kid, whether you're gonna help me or not"
She doesn't say another word. You can tell that she has a lot of other stuff to say, but you know her and you know that she'll keep her mouth shut.
You take a deep breath and calm down, then you speak again.
"I need to take some blood from him, for a DNA test" you announce.
The two guys who brought the cage in the lab walk towards the exit.
"You got it, boss. We'll get changed to go in" one of them says.
"No! I'll go in. I just need all of you to keep quiet and to not panic of anything happens. He needs to trust me and showing him that I'm not scared of him is gonna help" you stop them.
Everyone holds their breath as they watch you go in the cage with a needle and a little empty blood container.
One of the guys closes the door after you and you close your eyes, as the Wendigo hisses at you. You open your eyelids and look right into the Wendigo's eyes.
"Hey, buddy. Remember me from earlier?" you ask calmly, slowly walking towards him. "I know that you can understand me, so I'll let you know that we need some blood for DNA testing so we can help you heal and get back home. Doesn't that sound amazing?" you continue speaking.
You hold you hand out in front of the creature to show him the needle. He looks at it, scared.
"I need you to trust me on this one, Josh" you call him by his name, hoping he won't react violently.
And luckily he seems to relax. He sits down and you approach him, sitting on the ground as well.
"It's gonna hurt a little bit, I won't lie to you. But I promise I'll make it quick" you say as you push the needle in a visible vein on his hand.
When you finally get all the blood you needed and you take the needle out, you slowly get up, trying not to scare him.
"Thank you, Josh" you say, walking backwards towards the exit.
"Open the door, you idiots!" one of the women yells, causing you to look at her so you can tell her to shut up.
"No!" Alice screams.
But before you can look back at the Wendigo you feel the excruciating pain on your arm. You put your other hand over the bleeding wound, the warm liquid burning your skin.
The Wendigo screams, approaching you again, getting ready to attack you again.
"Josh..." is all you can say, but it doesn't help. His eyes are black, emotionless.
But before he can tackle you, two of your men drag you out of the cage and close it fast.
You lay on the floor as a woman bandages you. Josh's screams are still audible and they break your heart.
Alice holds your hand, worried. You give her the vial with the Wendigo's blood.
"Go analyze it. I'm gonna be just fine. We need the results as soon as possible" you smile.
She gets up and runs towars her lab, as you close your eyes just to rest a little bit.
