‘Some say the world will end in fire,

Some say in ice.

From what I’ve tasted I of desire

I hold with those who favour fire’

-Exert from ‘Fire and Ice’, a poem by Robert Frost (It’s my favourite poem)

I spent all English with jealous stares digging into my back. I won’t say that I wasn’t a little smug about it because I was but I was uncomfortable with the attention. I let out a sigh of relief when the bell rang signaling the end of English and I was the first to leave, anxious to get away from all the stares. I moved quickly towards my next class which was tedious and long and before I knew it the bell rang again, except this time it was lunch. I internally groaned. I had to sit with Adrian and his friends. I had texted Penny our changed seating arrangements before English so she knew where to sit. I was glad she was with me because otherwise I feared that someone was going to get hurt.

As soon as I entered the cafeteria I heard someone yell my name and I looked up from the floor and saw that it was Adrian. His yell had made a few people stare so I walked quickly over to his table with my head bowed. When I arrived I was greeted with the faces of Adrian’s misfit friends. Like Adrian I they all looked like they worked out regularly and they all had the bad boy image and attitude exuding from every part of their bodies.

“So Ashley these are my friends,” he pointed to a blonde haired guy with the greenest eyes I’ve ever seen,” That is Adam,” then he pointed to a guy with black hair, brown eyes and a scar running through the middle of his nose. He had the demeanor of a true bad boy, the brooding one that liked the use of sarcasm,” That’s Caine,” Adrian went on to tell me the names of all the guys around the table. There was Adam, Caine, Jack, Will, Mason and Adrian.

“Who is this Adrian?” a guy who I thought was Will asked.

“This is my friend Ashley,” he replied

“Who says I’m your friend Forsyth?” I said.

“Since I walked over to you that one lunch,” he said smugly.

“Whatever happened to the freedom where I could make my own decisions?”

“I’m pretty sure you still have it Ash.”

“I don’t because you just made the choice that I was your friend and that evidently demonstrates a clear controversy to between what you just said and did,” I said angrily. Before Adrian could say anything someone started clapping slowly.

“I think you may have your hands full on this one Adrian,” Cole said and Adrian just looked stunned.

“I’m not usually this forward around people,” I mumble. Luckily Penny saved me from anymore comments about my character. I let out a sigh of relief, I was no longer alone. She noted my relieved expression and gave me a small smile.

“So you’re the school nerd,” one of the guys stated with a thoughtful expression.

“I most certainly am, have you any problem with that?”

“No,” he said,” is it true that you memorised the dictionary?”

“Yes,” I said simply. He smirked like he didn’t believe me.

“Prove it. Tell me the meaning of the word ‘dictionary’.”

“Dictionary, a noun derived from ancient Latin in the sixteenth century. It comes from the word ‘dictio’ meaning to say. It means a book or electronic resource that lists words in a language (typically in alphabetical order) and gives their meaning, or gives the equivalent words in a different language, often providing information about pronunciation, origin and usage.” They all stared at me stunned and I felt a blush creep up from my neck and reach my cheeks.
