‘The sparrow flies south for winter’ –Skulduggery Pleasant (this is one of my favourite quotes of all time)

Adrian POV

I followed Ashley to her car and she almost immediately started driving. I had no idea where we were going and it didn’t look like it was close, Ash would never choose somewhere close. It was a tense 15 minute drive in which neither of us started a conversation, not even music was playing. She parked on the edge of a wood and walked towards it. What was it with this girl and woods? They seemed to be her retreat point if anything bad happened that she didn’t want anyone to know or see. I followed her into the woods and we hiked a steady path for about 20 minutes before she abruptly stopped and turned around.

“You are the first person I’ve ever brought here,” she started, “Please don’t abuse this privilege and show anyone else because I would rather that this stay private.”

“If that is what you want. I will keep this a secret.” The mystery behind this girl was only getting deeper and deeper as I spent more time with her, it was thoroughly confusing. It only made me wonder why Ash was like she is and how to fix it. Ash nodded in response to my answer and started walking towards a tall bush that blocked whatever was behind it from sight. I almost told her to stop when she just disappeared into the bush and didn’t come back. I was stunned.

“Game Boy just walk through the bush, it doesn’t hurt.” Ash’s voice drifted back over the top of the bush. Taking a deep breath a walked into the bush.

(A/N Listen to the song now)

She was right, it didn’t hurt, but the sight that waited on the other side did. I was so stunned I came to a complete halt and I swear my jaw had touched my chest. It was so pretty it hurt, so perfect that it couldn’t be real. It looked like a scene from one of Ashley’s faerytales, the moon was perfectly reflected off the water of the lake and it’s light lit up the entire clearing showing me the tall trees outlining the edge of the lake. The trees were a perfect shade of green and the water clear, even the moon was large and full. To top it off Ash was standing in front of me with a proper smile on her face. She walked up to me and put one of her fingers under my chin and pushed it closed.

“Breathtaking isn’t it?” she said softly.

“It is more than breathtaking. It’s…impossibly real.” I finally managed to gasp out. Her smile was the realest I had ever seen on her, it seemed that being here had momentarily lifted some of her worries. Yet still there was a guarded look in her eyes.

“I like your description Game Boy,” she said, “Do you want to come for a swim?” Without waiting for a reply she pulled off her shirt to reveal her sport bra underneath and she dived into the cool water. I quickly followed Ashley’s example and threw my shirt on top of her discarded one and walked into the water. It was deeper than I expected but it felt nice to be swimming again. I waded out a little further so I was only just standing up when Ash decided to reappear.

“You realise that you are actually smiling and not smirking?” she asked.

“Very few people have seen me smile, so you should count yourself lucky to have seen it and not fallen to my feet begging me to kiss you.”

“Yuck,” she replied with a splash of water to my face, “Who would want to kiss you?”

“Only every girl in the entire school and then some.” She made a face.

“I did not need to know that Adrian.”

“One day you too will want kiss a piece of this.” I gestured towards my body. She grinned.

“Do you know how many people want me Adrian? Because my guess is that its more than your fan club of hormonal teenagers. And by the way the last guy that tried to kiss me went to hospital with a very broken nose so don’t try your luck.”

“It’s true that your reputation for turning down guys may have stopped a few people but it will never stop me from trying.” Ash’s defenses went straight back up and she raised her fists.

“Make a move on me and I will break more than your nose.” She hissed.

“I wont make a move until you want me to fiammella, that you can trust on my honor as a gentleman.”

“Since when were you a gentleman?” she replied but she must have seen the truth in my eyes because she lowered her fists and her voice wasn’t as sharp.

“I’ve always been one, you just didn’t know.” She rolled her eyes at me and I retaliated by sticking my tongue out. That made her laugh a proper laugh.

“What are you, 5?” she managed to say out loud between laughing fits.

“I never claimed otherwise.” I replied. After a while she stopped laughing and we played around for half an hour before deciding that it was time to get out.

“I’m cold, let’s go!” Ash complained. I sighed and let her lead the way to the shore. When she reached the edge and stood up the moonlight was in perfect a perfect position to give the perfect amount of light to show off her back. I gasped loudly and she stopped.

“I was wondering when you would notice.” She said softly. I cant believe I hadn’t noticed it, all the way from her right shoulder to her left hip was a scar.

“What happened fiammella?” I asked shocked. She sighed.

“Tell me what you think happened in my past to make me this closed off because I have noticed that you and Caine want to find out.”

“It was something big because you weren’t this closed off in early primary school, you were certainly shy and quiet and people could tell that you weren’t telling people everything about your life. Then you came back after a family holiday and you were completely gone, whoever you were before was gone and you wouldn’t talk to anyone. Even the few people you considered friends you cast out from your life. It was about then that Hailey started to bully you and you never seemed to protect yourself from her, you almost welcomed it. Eventually you flew off the radar until this year when people started to pay more attention to you and so you went back to being blank faced and trying to stay unnoticed. So I investigated a little. Whatever happened to you has hurt you both physically and mentally and you feel guilty for that. It has something to do with the movie I just have to figure out what.” I finish, frustrated with what I don’t know.

“I will not argue against any point you have made nor will I agree with anything. It seems that despite any protests I might have against you finding this stuff out you will not stop, so you can continue this investigation but expect no willing help for me. You have to do it all on your own.” She said with a fierce voice.

“That seems fair Ash. But please can you give me some kind of hint in the right direction!”

“I think it’s time to go Adrian,” she said abruptly, “Leave me alone for the moment, I need to think.” I grabbed onto the belt loops of her jeans and pulled her towards me, stunned she didn’t try to pull away. I leant towards her until my lips were millimeters from her ear.

“One day you’ll be begging me to stay.”
