‘People fear death even more then pain. It’s strange that they fear death. Life hurts a lot more than death. At the point of death, the pain is over. Yeah, I guess it is a friend.’ –Jim Morrison

Ashley POV

As soon as Adrian left I punched a tree. As my fist connected with it a searing pain went up my arm, stemming from one of my knuckles. But I didn’t really feel it. The anger I had not 2 minutes ago evaporated into the air and I felt drained. So packing up everything I grabbed my bag and walked towards Bloomingfield High because to leave, I had to sign out first. After doing so I walked home with only my thoughts for company.

It was only in my bedroom that reality kicked in. I hissed in pain as I grabbed the bandages and the aspirin. Definitely a broken knuckle and the others were bruised black. I winced as I remembered that I’d punched Adrian. He would most certainly have a nice bruise to show off tomorrow to whomever he decided was worthy enough. The bruise probably didn’t look any better than my knuckles, to be honest. I knew how hard I punched. At this thought I had the aspirin and started bandaging my knuckles focusing particularly on the broken one. I guess that having a mother that had very good medical training helped in situations like this.

I heard the song Poor Unfortunate Souls and realised that my phone was ringing, luckily I was just finishing. When I saw the caller ID a ghost of a smile caught onto my face.

“Hey Penaynay!” I said with the overexcited tone of a 6 year old.

“Hey Ashy!” she replied with the same tone.

“What are you doing at this present point in time?” I asked a bit more seriously.

“Just checking that you hadn’t died during your adventure into the woods.”

“No, I’m still residing in the land of the living. But I appreciate your concern over my well being.”

“Your welcome. I wondering if you wanted to come over this afternoon and have some girl time?” she asked.

“Sure. When?”

“I was hoping now actually,” she paused, “If that’s not against your, you know, perfect record.”

“I’m at home right now so I have nothing better to do.” I said in reply.

“Cool! I live at 27 Winchester Lane.”

“I’ll see you soon then?”

“Yup. Seeya.”  She hung up and I grabbed my car keys off the kitchen table and made my way to her house. I pulled up to an old style suburban house with a cool old fashioned door knocker. I knocked it thrice and she opened up the door with a big, goofy grin plastered on her face. Ushering me inside she grabbed my hand and pulled me up to her room. It was painted a pale blue colour and she had the most gorgeous bed cover of a ballerina standing en pointe. The things that really drew my attention however were the massive bookshelf beside her bed and the easel and canvas beside a big window. I took my time in looking through her books and had to smile at her choices and then walked over the easel and saw one of the prettiest views ever. Outside the window you could see the flowering tree in her back garden and the small that ran behind about 10 metres behind the fence line. Around the creek was a group of trees that had a few birds in them and the creek was a beautiful blue/green colour. It was picturesque. Noticing my awe she laughed and drew my attention the small bunny she was holding. Seeing my line of attention she smiled.

“This is Cadbury.” She said proudly.

“Is that some kind of exotic land?” I ask.

“No silly! It’s the best chocolate ever and it’s proudly Australian!”

“Have you got any with you?” I said curiously.

“Yeah, come to the kitchen.” So as a pair we made a trip to the kitchen to taste this chocolate. Like the rest of the house the kitchen had impeccable interior design. She handed me a bar of chocolate wrapped in purple in silence. Breaking off a piece I placed it in my mouth and I moaned. It was the best chocolate I had ever tasted! It melted on my tongue and its chocolaty goodness became a necessity in my life. I couldn’t help but break off more pieces and shove them in my mouth in an unlady like display of gluttony. Penny let a guffaw of laughter and took a piece herself.

“Where do you get this stuff?” I ask as I follow Penny who had just put Cadbury back in his cage.

“Online, I haven’t seen it in a shop here yet but I am open to surprises.” She says with a slightly downcast tone. We walked back up to her room where she fell on her bed. Not leaving the opportunity open I ran over and started tickling Penny. She rolled over and tried to escape but I was stronger than her and a lot more strategic and she failed. I only stopped when she had streams of tears running in tracks down her face. I collapsed on the bed beside her and she gave me an evil grin.

“I’m so getting you back for that!” she exclaimed and promptly started tickling me back. I’m not sure if it was possible but I was more ticklish than her. She only stopped when she was sure I had been given sufficient punishment. Which meant it was twice as long.

“Want to stay over tonight?” she said once I had recovered to the point I was not in hysterics.

“Yes! Yes! Yes!” I squealed, grinning from ear to ear.

“Come on, let’s make dinner.” Dinner ended up being lasagna after a fair amount of the ingredients landed on our clothes so while it was cooking Penny chose a movie and I changed into a spare pair of clothes from my bag. I brought them because I had meant to ask Penny if I could shower as I knew I let off an unpleasant odour after my adventure in the woods.

Meeting Penny downstairs I smiled to see that she had a frown on her face and was staring intently at some movies laid out in front of her.

“You know your face will stay like that if the wind changes right?”

“I know, I know but I have no idea what movie to watch!” In front of her was a horror movie, a chick flick, a romance and an action movie. I pointed to the action movie. While she put it on I pulled out the lasagna and brought it back to her on a plate with a knife and fork and she thanked me and then pulled me over to the couch until the movie ended. After a bowl of ice cream and chocolate we decided it would be best if we went to sleep since we had school. It was only later that I realised that Penny had not once asked about why my hand was wrapped in bandages.

I know is short but I had to end it there and I had a small caes of writers block!
