This wasn't happening. There was no way it was her...

“What the hell are you doing here?” I demanded.

I looked over at Dad, pleading for an explanation. “Please tell me this is a joke, Dad.”

“Now honey, please hear me out. We never planned on this happening and I wouldn't be telling you if it wasn't serious.”

The woman tried to speak, but I stopped her. “No, you don't get to say a damn word. You lost that right a long time ago.”

“Honey, please don't talk to your mother like that,” Dad pleaded. “We've had a long talk about what this would be for our family, and—”

Mother? Mother - really?” I laughed. “Don't you think she lost the right to call herself that when she left me...when she left us both a long time ago? This woman is nothing but a bad memory that I'd fought hard to put in my past.”

“Kendall, please hear us out. I—”

“Shut up! I don't want to hear from you!” I shouted and caused the entire room to become quiet. Everyone in the room was looking at us, but I didn't care.

“Kendall, now that's enough. Let's all sit down and talk about this, please.”

Looks like I came at a good time.

I looked over and hadn't even noticed that Robby was now standing at our table. And I'd never been happier to see him in my life.

“Robby, will you get me out of here, please?” I begged.

He nodded, and I was about to stand and leave when Dad reached for my arm.

“Please just me give me ten minutes. That's all, and if you want to leave after that, I won't stop you.”

“Please honey. Just give us a chance to explain everything to you.”

I looked over at the estranged woman. “You don't get to call me honey. You lost that right when you walked out on us. On both of us, if I might remind you, Dad.”

I looked over at him, and he lowered his head, pinching the bridge of his nose while squinting his eyes.

“Kendall, you wanna fill me in on what's going on here?” Robby asked, taking the empty seat beside me.

“Oh absolutely,” I answered. “My father has decided that he wants to marry this woman. And in case you missed it, she's the woman that gave birth to me, then decided she didn't want to be a mother or a wife any longer and left us both.”

“Not a day goes by that I don't regret that, and I'll have to live with it for the rest of my life. I know saying how sorry I am doesn't cover it and never will, but we have to start somewhere, Kendall.”
