I stepped out of the car and pulled my suit jacket from the passenger seat. After a detailed scan in the parking lot, I didn’t see her anywhere.

“Hey fucker,” I heard a familiar voice behind me.

“Lance, what the hell are you doing here?”

“I didn’t leave my room quick enough yesterday. I was asked to come tonight to replace a sick teacher, so here I am, doing my scholarly duties.”

I nodded, still looking around the parking lot.

“Dude, she’s not here.”

“What?” I looked over at him. “She said she was asked to be here.”

Lance chuckled. “Oh, I didn’t know that, but seeing that look on your face was enough to answer my next question for you.”

“Which was?”

“What the hell are you doing?”

“What’re you talking about?”

“Don’t bullshit with me, bro. You’re fucking things up. Big time.” Lance patted my back. “I know you well, and you’re kicking yourself in the ass for thinking you got her tangled up in a shitshow, and you’re second-guessing everything with her.”

Damn…if he didn’t know me well.

“Lance, I fucking love her.”

He laughed. “That’s more than obvious. I’ve never seen you so screwed up.”

“But—”

“Stop it, Kyle. Stop getting in your head. If you love her, get her. Nothing else matters. Fuck the rest.”

“Even if I fuck up her career?”

“You’re not fucking anything up. Except your chance to get the girl.” Lance sighed. “That girl is one in a million. She’s the whole damn package and you’re lucky I didn’t see her first, man,” he teased. “But I won’t lie. She’s not going to keep waiting around for you to get your head out of your ass.”

Lance never held back from me, and I was always grateful for that. He might be the younger brother, but he always went for what he wanted. Consequences be damned. I knew he was right. Kendall Clark was the woman I’d always dreamed of, and she was right here. Right now.

“Gentleman, good to see you here,” Mr. Hawkings said, patting Lance on the back before continuing his walk to the gymnasium.
