The cold breeze caressed your skin as you looked on out at your New York City view. There wasn't any magic though, no glowing skyline or any noticeable beauty, rather you saw old run-down apartment buildings that mirrored the one that you lived in and were currently stood on the fire escape of. You remembered back to when you first moved to New York, even this run-down part that you called home seemed to have magic floating in the air. Everyone had their purpose and even if it wasn't the best life out there, it was a life that they made the best of. Most of the people in your building were poorer than most, focusing their life on their art of choice and failing to make their mark in such a competitive field.
You couldn't remember the last time the rent for your home had been paid. You were a painter, rarely having a piece of art sold and relying on income from freelance work and doing any odd creative jobs people needed. Your boyfriend Roger was a musician, equally as talented but equally as lost in the world without consistent employment, along with his best friend Mark who longed to capture the story of those in New York but no one else seemed to want to help him with it.
The three of you had a good-sized penthouse, your landlord being your ex-roommate Benny who had now decided he wanted payment, after a long time of the three of you being unable to pay. It certainly wasn't the life that you wanted to live and looking down at the many people who called the streets home, made you realise even more that life wasn't on your side.
You stared out onto the street until arms were wrapped around your middle, helping protect you from the bitter air around you. You looked over your shoulder to see your boyfriend Roger holding you.
"You look especially beautiful in the moonlight," he whispered.
You rolled your eyes at his comment. You didn't know what Roger saw in you, but you weren't going to complain as you loved him dearly and you were glad that he was there.
"Don't be daft," you sighed. "It's really the darkness that helps mask my ugliness."
He shook his head.
"The moonlight truly makes you glow," he smiled. "What are you doing out here? It's too cold to be stood out at this time without a jacket."
"I'm sorry," you whispered.
He kissed your temple lovingly.
"There's no need to apologise. I was just asking."
You gave him a gentle smile. "I just like to see the world go by. I do wish though that the world wasn't so cruel."
"I agree. The world is a cruel existence, but things are going to change. I promise you that."
