Thank you Faithswinson04 for suggesting this! School has started again, so there’s somewhat of an excuse as to why updates are coming out so late (I’m a freshman in high school now, so that’s fun ienfibwef)

May 20th, 2008

It was the end of the day, students rushed out of  classrooms and into the stuffy halls. Chatter was always a constant with the teens, but the talk turned to white noise for one student in particular. He stared worriedly at his phone. The text that shone on his screen was vague, making his heart spike. Anti sighed softly and moved a few mousy brown hairs from the way of his veiw. He glanced at the text again.

Dark: meet me at the field

He got a bad feeling in his gut. Like the bad feeling he got on the first day of high school, although he couldn’t quite remember it since he was a senior now. But it was a dropping sensation that curdled his insides, making his legs weak. Anti was afraid something like this would happen ever since he came out.

Anti tried his best to stop the feeling and turned to go out the east doors. It was chilly outside, gloomy, the slight scent of rain in the air. Anti loved days like this. He spotted a figure from his stance at the doorway, pacing the field. He recognized the broad shoulders as Dark’s. There was an even smaller figure next to him. Flowing red hair tied back into a low ponytail. Kaitlin. What was Kaitlin doing with Dark? She was a cheerleader. Dark and Anti almost never hung out with any of the sports kids.

The senior jogged to the football field, waving to his boyfriend once he got close enough. Dark didn’t wave back, but he did manage a small smile. Something was definitely wrong. Kaitlin didn’t even spare him a glance and instead went to sit on the bleachers. “Dark, I got your text. What’s up?”

Dark didn’t respond for a moment, only opening his mouth and closing it a few times.

“I think we need to take a break.” The bitter words quickly flew from Dark’s lips. He bit his lip, seeing the shock grow onto Anti’s features, a few drops of rain falling into his freshly cut hair. “What do you mean?”

“You know what I mean. This isn’t going to work out.”

Anti chuckled dryly. “Not going to work out? A few weeks ago we were playing video games in my room, having the time of our lives.”

Dark was staring at his feet now. Kaitlin was standing again.

“You were a girl then.” Dark muttered.

That hurt, Anti. That hurt a fuck ton.  “I was- this is about me being trans? You said it was fine though-”

“It’s not!” Dark yelled. “Do you know what people talk about behind our backs? How much damage this has done to us?”

Tears were bubbling in Anti’s eyes. It was raining harder now. How cliche. “I don’t get it. You’re acting like…” Dark frowned. “Go ahead, finish that sentence.”

Anti clenched his hands, his fingernails digging into his palms. He needed something, anything, to ground himself right now. Even if it was a small pinch in the palm of his hands. “A coward, you’re a fucking coward!” Dark’s eyes flashed. Almost like a small sign of agreement. That quickly faded. “Me? I’m the coward? You’re the one who was too scared to admit you’re not a boy.”

It was like Dark stuck a knife in his back and twisted it. He had so much more to say. He wanted to sit down with Dark and talk. He wanted to try and fix this. Those were all second thoughts after he punched Dark in the face. Immediate regret flooded Anti’s limbs. He froze. Kaitlin ran over to them. Her piercing green gaze was almost blinding. “What the hell!? C’mon Dark, this freak just doesn’t know when to stop.”

Dark rubbed his face, already the sign of a bruise forming was evident. The two walked away. Anti caught their hands intertwining as they went.

Two things happened that day. Dark suddenly turned into a douche, and Anti lost his best friend.

He preferred himself to be seen as a poet. A poet who worked alongside friends in a blood stained symphony. Besides, using the blood as ink saved him money. He felt his poems came out better when he had to work quickly and not overthink it. If he overthought it, the blood would dry in the pen, creating an unusable lump that took forever to clean out. The poems would be turned into small torn flakes and thrown away.

The Marriage of Figaro was playing loudly on the radio. A copy of the Italian libretto was held in careful hands as the music rang beautifully in his ears. Anti sighed contently. If anyone were to look at the scene, they would see a man enjoying the wonders of classical music. That’s what they would think, if they didn’t look to their right to see a large clawfoot tub almost filled to the brim with blood. A body hung over it on a hook. The constant drip was a simple melody.

Someone knocked on the door. It wasn’t heard though, Anti had the music turned up far too loud. The knock came again. Anti heard it this time and stilled. He turned down the radio, the music quieting to a whisper. The varnished handle turned. The door opened and a head peeked in. “Sir, I thought we had planned to go out this evening to pick up-” Anti smiled and held up his hand. “All in good time, EJ.”

EJ nodded and carefully closed the door. His footsteps faded quickly. Anti set down the libretto and turned the music back up. With a grin he moved from his seat to look at his work. The subject they had taken this time was Jill Cox. A woman powered by feminism and hard drugs. Too bad she raped a man.

Anti believed it wasn’t murder if the person wasn’t innocent. And if he didn’t get caught.

It was pitch black outside save for the porch light. Millions of stars were dancing in the sky, the moon smiling down on the earth. They were sitting in the dense grass that surrounded the property. Anti adjusted the cap on his head and glanced at his partner. EJ was peering at their subject through a pair of binoculars. Their subject was sitting on the porch in an old wooden rocking chair with the radio blaring an old 80s station.

Anti had expected the man to be in bed, allowing them to efficiently kidnap him. Instead the subject was still up, probably reminiscing on some old memories. Anti had all of it down to a simple plan, but now there would be a few added struggles. “We’ll sneak around the back and shoot him with the dart on the left side of the porch. We have to be extra careful this time, no fuck ups.” EJ nodded in agreement. They stayed crouched low and crawled through the grass.

They scampered like rabbits towards the house, making it behind it before their subject caught them.

The man on the porch heard a rustle and scanned the yard. Not seeing anything, he turned the radio louder. Take on Me by Ah-Ha! came on.

Anti and EJ ran around the house and to the side of the porch, making sure to stay low.

Anti took the dart out and placed it in a gun. He carefully aimed it at the man’s neck. With a twitch of his eye he pulled the trigger.

The man flinched violently and turned his head just enough to see Anti before he fell to the wooden boards. Pure terror could be seen in his eyes. Anti loved it. EJ hopped over the railing to restrain the man with zip ties while Anti took the stairs.

He kicked the subject’s shoulder. “Good night, Dark.”
