there was something almost delicate about the girl.
the flickering flames curled in the air and gave off enough light to show all of her best features.
her face,
despite her attempts to hide it,
was etched with worry as she bounced her foot to rid herself of the nerves.
jacob felt a small smile appear on his face at the sight of her.
having never seen her before,
jacob couldn't help but feel a sense of familiarity towards her.
he took a seat next to her,
feeling confidence run rampant in his veins,
but as he took a look in her eyes,
it suddenly vanished.
they were deep with thought,
and as though she'd taken an inch of every person in her life and placed a piece of her soul inside of them.
he could only stare at her with his mouth agape,
trying to find the words to say.
though he wasn't sure if there were any correct words to say to someone so divine.
"are you okay?"
just when jacob thought she couldn't possibly get any better;
her voice was smooth and made the hairs on his body stand.
"y-yeah. i'm jacob."
"y/n."
"that's a beautiful name."
y/n smiled,
which instantly made jacob smile as well.
"thank you."
"so...what brings you to the reserve?"
she pointed a finger coated in perfect polish towards a figure on the other side of the fire.
jacob watched as the boy flirted with a girl in his class,
though he'd never remembered either of their names.
he could see the similarities in the boy and y/n.
with seemingly perfect skin and glowing radiancy.
"is that your brother?"
y/n snickered and shook her head.
"hardly. adriel is only my cousin."
having placed the name to the boy,
jacob let out a mocking laugh.
"adriel is your cousin?"
he could see the similarities,
though it seemed impossible a girl like her could be related to someone so...pretentious.
"yeah?"
her tone was defensive,
making jacob quick to hurry and backtrack.
"i don't mean anything by it. it's just...he's sort of an ass."
jacob waited for the slap across his face or the curses that would remain in the air until the fire before them turned to ash.
but her stern expression only fell and became replaced with a smile.
she let out a laugh then nodded her head in agreement.
"he is an ass. suppose it was bound to happen when girls have kissed the ground he walked on since diapers....do you two talk much?"
jacob shook his head.
"we hardly cross paths."
"he's quite fun if you can see past the brute he tries to be. he's a kid at heart."
"aren't we all?"
jacob humored,
finding himself lost in the beauty of the smile that
y/n wore.
"so...adriel brought you here?"
"him and his father my only family now..."
her tone was as monotone as she could make it,
trying to mask her emotions,
but jacob could see the way she stared down at the dirt on her shoes in despair.
"well, hey, you've got a friend here."
"yeah?"
"yeah, are you kidding? i'd love to have you around, y/n."
y/n nodded and heavenly whispered,
"then i'll be around, jacob."

jacob hadn't realized it upon his first glance,
but there was something dark about y/n that he couldn't quite understand.
when she thought no one was looking,
her eyes would become dim and lifeless,
the passion being ripped from her smile and being replaced with sunken in cheeks.
but of course,
jacob was always looking;
he couldn't help himself.
it shocked him when he first saw this slipping of her mask.
whatever happened before her moving to the reserve was sinister.
jacob made it a habit to sit next to her at their scheduled lunches,
giving her time to hide behind his burly stature for a moments of rest.
surely,
masking herself for the enjoyment of others got exhausting.
"do you want to...talk about anything?"
jacob asked once they were the only ones left at the table.
y/n shrugged.
"you've got some lovely friends."
"thank you. they love you. but seriously-"
"i'm tired."
y/n got to her feet and gave jacob a tap on the shoulder before heading out of the front doors.
he had half a mind to rush after her and beg her to let him be there for her.
but jacob was frozen in his seat,
pondering the words left unspoken between the two.
