"please don't,"
y/n begged just barely above a whisper,
gripping onto jasper's cool hand in an attempt to keep him grounded.
the boy began to grind his teeth and hesitantly pulled his hand out of y/n's.
"i have to."
"no you don't!"
he sighed and felt the knot in his own throat begin to grow,
"y/n listen,"
his soft but stern voice warned,
grabbing her shoulders to steady her.
"i have to. you have to understand."
"i don't!"
she cried out,
shaking her head in denial.
a life without jasper was one she had not imagined,
especially so soon.
she knew mortality would only take her so far,
but they had a life time to go!
she began to feel her eyelids grow heavy and her once shaky body grow calm,
but she fought against it.
"jasper! stop! i hate it when you do that,"
y/n whispered and shook her head of the tiredness.
"i can't stay anymore, y/n. would you rather i stay and tear your head off like i almost did the other night?"
"oh, you're so dramatic! it wasn't even that bad..."
jasper took in a deep breath and cupped a soft cheek of y/n's.
he relished in the feeling of her smooth skin against his own;
her warmth making his usually icy hands tingle;
her kind eyes that kept him at bay with the world.
he knew the yearning for her was going to tear him up inside,
but he had to leave.
for her own safety.
"don't leave me,"
her pleas were barely audible now,
but jasper could hear them loud and clear.
it made his heart sink,
"i'll love you forever, y/n."
and suddenly,
jasper was no more.
y/n stood all by herself with a wringing heart,
the only trace of jasper being his expensive cologne.
***
she laid in the bed rather restless,
not being able to quit the tossing and turning.
y/n felt the smile play across her lips as she remembered the sweet evening her and jasper once spent together in this very bed,
her head against his chest and his hands holding her close.
he'd kiss the top of her head and they'd spend hours firing questions at one another,
so curious about their lives.
but now it was only a memory,
and that realization made y/n's stomach lurch.
she sighed and got to her feet,
slipping the shoes on for a quick walk outside.
she needed the fresh air now more than ever.
the moon was bright and wide which sent a small gasp past her lips.
she had never seen it so close.
it was mesmerizing.
y/n habitually turned to her side to show jasper,
only there was no jasper.
just empty air where he should've been.
***
months had now passed a melancholy y/n who was trying her hardest to push past the memory of jasper.
"hey! are you doing okay?"
alice asked y/n one day after lunch,
her perfect smile matching her peppy steps.
"hm? oh yeah..i'm okay. how are you guys?"
"we're quite alright. you look...sad."
y/n let out a weak laugh and turned to face the girl,
"can you blame me?"
"you miss him a lot."
y/n nodded in confirmation,
although she was sure alice already knew everything better than y/n knew herself.
"well, things will be better soon."
"you think so?"
"i know so,"
alice winked and waltzed away from y/n's side and into her own class.
y/n let out a loose breath of air out,
realizing she was too caught up in her own selfish heartbreak to see that maybe jaspers family was hurt by his departure.
she made it to her class and took a seat next to a recently inhabited seat,
and buried her head in her book like she had grown so used to doing.
***
y/n wiped the perspiring palms of her hands on her pants and knocked on the front door rather quietly,
but smiled as it opened.
"carlisle!"
she greeted.
the door opened a bit wider and there stood jasper,
his hands in his pockets and a slightly paler face if that was possible.
her heart began to slam against her ribcage at the sight of the boy she loved most.
and as many questions and insults that were banging around in her head,
no words left her mouth.
there the two stood,
gaping at each other and trying to calculate their next move.
jasper stepped forward to her and took her face in his hands,
letting his thumb caress her cheek.
every raging thought was no longer at the contact,
until she breathed out.
"you came back."
"i missed you."
she lowered her head and looked at their feet,
trying to beg the tears to go away.
"y/n?"
he directed her head back up to him,
his gentle smile making her heart skip a few beats.
"i'm sorry. i'll never leave you again."
she nodded.
"say you forgive me."
"i forgive you."
he wrapped her in his arms and let her head rest against his cold chest,
before she let her arms snake around his waist.
"i love you, jasper."
"i love you. forever."
the moment of reconciliation sent chills down y/n's spine.
she had spent so many nights dreaming and imagining this moment.
but nothing she could imagine would have amounted to this.
this was perfect.
she was home;
right where she belongs.
