“THAT IS NOT GOING TO SELL.” My producer says, “Not with that ending.”
I sigh, pushing my palms flat against my printed manuscript file. It isn't complete yet but today's the second day we're talking about it. “People have moved past happy endings, Haneul-ssi. They love endings like this one and it's what makes them crave for more.”
Haneul looks at me in the eye. He's actually really handsome. Like the kind of handsome you see on TV. People often say he belongs in front of the camera rather than behind it. But his obsession with happy endings throw me off. He stresses me out. It's the second time we're working together after my small web drama went viral.
It was a happy ending. Maybe that's why he expects the second one to be happy too.
Well, maybe he's not obsessed with happy endings. Maybe he's just obsessed with approval since this will be his major drama debut.
“So you're telling me that it's okay to have their relationship going so well the entire time only for her to reject him once he gets on one knee and for what?” He asks. Honestly, he looks like a zombie right now with those dark shadows under his eyes. He looks like he could use some sleep.
“You don't see the point of this story at all. It's not just about their romantic business. It's about friendship and family and things people will be able to relate to.” I say. I know I'm right. I believe I'm right. “That's how the web drama went viral.” I add. That's a reach. Even I know that.
Haneul still rubs it on my face though. “We both know it went viral because the K-pop idol starring in it is too popular these days and it's his debut as an actor.”
I don't show him how I'm hurt by that. I take it as a fact, but as someone who brought stories to life, I expected him to appreciate my story telling. “Okay, so why did you even want to work with me again if you don't believe that I have the talent for this?”
My seniors in this field have told me to coax my producer. Just do everything to make him fall in love with my work, to make him want me in this project because he doesn't necessarily ‘need’ me. I ‘need’ him to be impressed with me.
“There are a lot of struggling and hungry writers out there who would kill to be in your shoes. This may be Kang Haneul's first big break but he's not new to the industry and people have been starting to recognize his talent.” That's what I've been told over and over.
But I can't shut my stupid mouth.
Haneul sighs, straightening his back as if he's getting ready for this conversation to be over with. “I thought I saw talent in that small web drama. I'm starting to think otherwise.”
