Chapter 12: Rescue Me

"Kender, What's going on?" AnnaLee asked, concerned. She knew it was late, but didn't mind. Anna knew Kender wouldn't be here unless it was important.

"I came to speak to you." Kender answered, while Anna took in his appearence. He looked a mess, almost as if he had aged since their phone call.

Anna had to remind herself that Kender was only a year or two younger than herself.

She supposed that knowing of your only sister's inevitable death would do that to a person.

"Come in." Anna said, stepping aside to give Kender room to enter the doorway.

When they got into the living room, Anna turned to face him. She could tell he was truly exhausted.

"Anna," Kender started.

AnnaLee became startled by his cold tone when he said her name.

Kender had never called her Anna before. The young man had always insisted on calling her Luna.

"Why don't we talk in my room?" Anna suggested.

She wanted to be able to speak freely with him, but feared Maksim would come down the stairs and spot them.

When Kender nodded his approval, Anna made haste to her bedroom, shutting the door behind them.

"Cassandra will be killed tomorrow at noon." Kender grumbled. "No, no, today. I forget how late it is."

"Kender, I hate what's happening. You must know, I really did try to help. You have become a friend to me-"

"Anna, stop. Please." Kender spoke in a hoarse voice, as if he were about to cry.

"Kend-"

"Anna, just listen!" He was more forceful this time. "Cassandra is the only family I have left. Our parents made us take a vow when we were young." Kender began, more calm now.

"We promised to always protect each other. Always." At this, his eyes brimmed with tears.

"Only, I didn't know how to protect her this time."

Tears streamed freely down the young boy's face. Anna knew they were caused by stress, grief, and helplessness.

Anna found herself reaching out to rub his shoulder, in an effort to comfort him. Only, Kender backed away from her touch.

"Please," he choked. "Let me finish."

Anna nodded as she dropped her hand by her side.

"I didn't know how I could get her out of this mess.... that is, until you called." Kender gulped.

"I was so hopeful that you would be able to change Alpha Lukin's mind, that I didn't realize that there was a possibility you couldn't.

"So when you called me, I was devastated." Kender explained.

Anna gave him a look filled with sympathy, which he noticed but did not want.

"I have a plan to save her..."

Anna was curious, now. What more could he do?

Her thoughts came to a stumbling halt, as Kender produced a shiny metal dagger from underneath his shirt.

"What are you doing?" Anna asked in panic, her eyes trained on the weapon in her friend's hand.

"I'm desperate." He spoke regretfully.

"Kender-"

"She's my sister. I can't just leave her to die."

"Kender, what is your plan?" Anna asked fearfully, as she backed away from him.
