Chapter 28: The Ultimate Opportunist

"Anna, this has never been tested. I don't know if we can take a risk like this." Nik said as he paced. The beta had been trying to talk some sense into his Luna for several days now, but she continued to stick to her plan. And today was the day she would act on it.

"We aren't taking any risks. It's my life and only mine. Put yourself in my shoes, Nik. Wouldn't you be willing to put your life on the line for Maks? Imagine what I'm feeling. I'm his mate."

"I know, Anna, but we would be doing this against his will. Don't you think we should respect his wishes?" Nik asked trying to reason with her, but she was past the point of no return.

"Please, you of all people know he wants to be with me. He doesn't want to die. He's just too stubborn to let any of us help him."

Nik gave up. He agreed with Anna that something had to be done, but this wasn't it. If something went wrong, the beta could loose his Alpha and his best friend.

However, if he didn't help Anna with this plan, could they think of a better one in time to save his life? Niklaus was the first to admit that he didn't have any ideas.

"Make up your mind now. If you won't help me, I need to find someone else who will..." Anna said defiantly as she looked up at her friend.

Nik felt the ultimate pressure. His instincts were conflicting with each other. On one hand, he had the obligation of protecting his Luna. This plan of hers could end up being her demise. On the other hand, he vowed to follow her lead and trust her with his life the day his pack accepted her. But which instinct was stronger?

With his best friend since childhood in mind, Nik gave his answer.

"Where do we start?"

Rushing through the halls of the hospital was easier said than done. Anna didn't take into account that she and Nik were the Beta and Luna.

Wherever they went, eyes from pack members followed. It never made Anna uneasy before, but it did now. She supposed it was because she had never wanted to go unseen before.

The plan had been to discreetly move through the halls, and into Maksim's room. Anna didn't want any interference from outsiders. But it looked as if things wouldn't be running as smoothly as the pair thought.

As Anna looked around, she realized that everyone was worried. That's why their eyes stayed with her.

"They must think that their Alpha is about to pass. Why else would their Luna be running to his room with such a worried look on her face?" Nik whispered behind her.

Anna's heart leaped at his words. She admitted, it did look quite bad. The last thing she wanted was to upset the pack, but if she was successful, there would be no tears shed for the Alpha anytime soon.

Coming to a stop outside Maksim's door, Nik turned around to Anna.

"Ok. I'll go in first. Just know that if he catches on before we finish, we will never get another chance. He'll make sure of it." Nik whispered. He knew this was the last shred of hope Anna had. If it didn't pan out, he didn't want her to be unprepared.

"Trust me, I know. As long as you do your part, I'll keep him occupied. It will all work out." Anna said quietly, more to reassure herself than anyone.

"Give me the syringe."

Pulling the needle out of her pocket, Anna handed it to Nik with shaky hands.
