Chapter 36: Fantasies Turn into Tragedies

"What are we doing here?" Anna asked, eyeing the gate of the cemetery.

It was one close to her childhood home. She wasn't sure why Maks came here but she hoped he didn't expect her to get out of the car. What if she saw someone she knew? She was supposed to be away at college.

"You'll see." came his answer. Why could he never answer her questions properly?

When he made a move to open the door, Anna stopped him.

"This place is near my home. What if I see someone I know?" she questioned, causing him to sigh.

"Then you'll introduce me and explain you took the weekend off to visit home."

Anna was surprised by his answer. She didn't realize that he would be willing to meet humans. Wasn't there some law against it? Did this mean he would eventually meet her family?

Anna was always under the impression she would have to choose which life she wanted to live, a normal human life or the life of a Luna. Perhaps she could be apart of both worlds after all.

Maksim walked around the car and opened her door to grab her hand.

Even after leading her through the gates, he didn't let her hand go. It was a strange behavior for him.

Believe it or not, Maksim was never the most affectionate person, especially in public.

Looking around, Anna realized that they were alone in the cemetery. Perhaps that explained the way he was acting.

Even so, she couldn't let go of the feeling that he was trying to comfort her.

She let the idea fade away as curiosity took over.

They were now at the end of the paved path and she could see the back gate of the cemetery.

Maksim led her down a row of tombstones and stopped in front of one with a giant bouquet of red roses covering it.

"Who is it?" Anna asked.

"Look and see." he answered encouragingly, letting go of her hand. His voice adopted a softer tone, making her nervous.

Pushing the flowers to the side, Anna gasped, tears filling her eyes.

It was her Grandpa's grave.

Anna squinted her tears away so she could read the engraving.

A loving Grandfather with a big imagination and even bigger heart

She laughed and sobbed at the same time.

"I understood you ran away before you had the chance to see him buried." Maks explained. "I thought it might help you to visit him."

Anna nodded, not able to find the words.

Looking at the roses, she wondered who sent them.

Grabbing them up, she searched for a card of some kind, but couldn't find one.

"Who do you think sent these?" She asked to no one in particular. It was only she and Maksim here and he didn't know her grandpa so he certainly wouldn't know who would leave flowers at his grave.

Looking to her mate, she realized he was nervously scratching the back of his neck.

"I have them sent every week." He confessed.

Anna was shocked.

"Why?" was all she could manage to choke out.

"He was the man who held your heart before I managed to steal it." Maks explained, leaving Anna in tears as she looked at him lovingly.

"Besides," Maksim said, clearing his throat, hoping to stop the intense look she was giving him, for he was surely smothering. "In many ways, he is the one that brought you to me. I owe him a great deal."

If he wanted to stop her from looking at him, he realized he had said the wrong thing.

Before he knew it, Anna was in his arms, kissing his mouth, his jaw. Anywhere she could reach.

He didn't hesitate to kiss back.

"I love you." She whispered in his ear.

"And I love you." Maks confessed as he pulled her back to look at her face.

Her eyes were brimmed with tears, he was sure they were the happy kind, and she still managed to look ridiculously beautiful.

Before he could take things further, He backed away completely. Now was not the right time. Whether she knew it or not, Anna would need this time with her grandpa to heal.

"I'll give you your privacy. You take your time. Whenever you're ready, I'll be waiting for you by the car."

"Okay." Anna smiled, grateful he would be patient. She could use some time alone.

"Okay." He smiled back. If he didn't leave now, he wouldn't be able to.

Turning on his heel, Maks made his way to the car quickly. The faster he got there, the faster Anna would come back and he could be with her.

When the car was in his sight, he pulled out his cell phone with a sigh.

He rolled his eyes when he saw Nik called him 3 times. His Beta could never handle the Alpha duties. Anytime Maks went out of town, his friend would constantly call to ask questions about the tiniest detail.

When the phone vibrated a forth time, Maksim finally gave in and answered.

*******

20 minutes earlier...

"It's time we go in." Nik ordered to the men around him. "It's obvious she isn't going to come out."

When he saw nothing but nods of approval, The Beta gave his orders.

"Alright spread out. Some of you cover the back door, while Val, Oli, and I come through the front." He decided, moving his hands around as he spoke.

Before they could act, Nik began again. "Remember, Cassandra may be small but we don't know if she's been trained. Keep an eye out."

Then they were off.

Nik watched as several men went around the back of the old house. His sight of them disappeared as he walked up the steps and faced the front door.

Slowly, he turned the knob and peeked inside. When he saw no sign of her, he opened the door and walked in, along with Val and Oli.

"Check the rooms." Nik ordered.

He walked around the small cottage, eyeing ever possible hiding spot.

"Beta!"

At the sound of his title being yelled, Nik stiffened and met the men near the back door.

"Look, Niklaus." Oli said, as he pointed. "Footprints."

Sure enough, bare footprints littered the soft ground and made a path leading into the shrubs.

Nik pulled his hair in frustration and gritted his teeth.

"What does this mean?" Val asked, clueless as to what was happening.

"Our property line ends with those shrubs." Oli said expectantly.

When Val sent another look of confusion Nik's way, the Beta clenched his fists.

"How can you be so dense?" Niklaus asked. "Cassandra is sniffing out your Luna."

At his statement, Val's eyes turned round and his face became pale. "What do we do?"

"I'm calling Maksim to warn him."
