(18) Nia

Nia is an ex-Caledonian railway 944 class 4-6-2T pacific tank, designed by William Pickersgill in 1917 for passenger trains, (and some banking too). When Nia was built at Hyde Park works in 1917, she was the 5th member of the class, being numbered 948. Her first duties on the Caledonian Railway were relatively restricted to freight as, unlike her classmates, she was seen as a burden by the railway due to her naivety and overly trusting nature getting her into relatively poor situations. However, the NWR soon requested an engine from the Caledonian Railway to help run suburban trains on the mainline, and the Caledonian supplied them with number 948. After a few tests, and giving her a repaint, Nia was set to work running the stopping passenger services along the mainline, putting in a good performance despite being a tank engines. Nia currently bears an orange livery, with red lining and a yellow number 18 on her side tanks. Though initially being based at Vicarstown MPD, Nia would the relocate to Tidmouth MPD in 1935, and has more recently been based out of Wellsworth MPD, helping with banking duties between trains.
