The raindrops pattered against the footpath. Zander walked under an umbrella, his rain booths getting wet. He didn't know why he was outside today, and he had no idea where he was going. He was just letting his feet decide where to take him.

Valentine's Day. It was Valentine's Day. Zander looked around, frowning at all the happy couples walking by. He sighed. Barely half of these couples will make it through together. That really made him think of what soulmates are. If you're meant to spend your life with that one special person, why don't you meet them early on? Why do some people get to adulthood first?

His steps faltered. Do I have a soulmate?

Is there someone to give it all?

He ignored his thoughts as he kept walking. He spotted a familiar face nearby under a shop canopy.

Jake.

Jake noticed him, and he waved at Zander. He motioned for Zander to come closer, which Zander did, standing in front of him still under the umbrella.

"Hi Jake," Zander said almost shyly, "what are you doing here?"

Jake hummed, "I wanted to get some cookies, but when I reached I didn't feel like it anymore so I came out here to go back but it started raining. I've been here since."

"Oh," Zander said, "why aren't you inside, then?"

Jake looked back inside the cafe, sighing. "All the couples inside are too sappy, I couldn't stand it."

Zander nodded. He knew how that felt.

They stood in silence for a moment before Jake spoke again, "I wish I was in there with someone." He looked back at Zander. "Someone special."

Zander hummed. A thought ran through his head, but he shrugged it off. It was ridiculous. Jake wouldn't even—

"Hey," Jake said, an almost teasing smile on his face, "how about we go inside and get a snack? Just hang out, you know?"

Zander's heart skipped a beat. "Oh, sure!"

Jake went to the door as Zander got under the awning as well, closing his umbrella. Jake opened the door for Zander, holding it open. "Come in, m'lady." He said jokingly.

Zander rolled his eyes playfully. "So you're trying to be a gentleman now?"

Jake hummed again, "Maybe," he answered, "if you want to be someone's special someone one day, you gotta be good enough, right?"

"You're better than enough."

It seemed like Zander's brain had short-circuited because it took him approximately 10 seconds to realize what he just said. When he realized he instantly focused on Jake.

He was surprised to see Jake blushing. His cheeks were tinted pink and he was looking at Zander intensely.

A genuine smile made his way to Jake's mouth. It was the sweetest smile Zander had ever seen Jake wearing. Jake let go of the door to pull Zander into a hug.

"Thank you," Jake said, and Zander could feel his warm breath on his ear.

Jake let go of Zander and Zander realized that despite it still raining, he felt much warmer, a gentle, fuzzy feeling in his stomach.

"Well," Jake opened the door again, "are we going in or not?"

Zander didn't reply. He just smiled, stepping into the cafe, Jake following behind.
