He didn't know how he got so far without them.

Feels like just yesterday he was right where they were, hanging out together, as best friends. Now here he is, years later, working at his company with barely any friends.

Now when he looks back at high school, the most he does is let out a humorless laugh. The way he clung to them was pathetic. He could tell how much they were sick of him. But he ignored it, for the sake of his friendship, and to give his own possessive feelings some closure.

"Best friends".

What a fucking joke.

Sometimes he wonders, what would've happened if he hadn't blown up the way he did when Jake told him he didn't want to be around him anymore? Maybe Henry and Liam would still be here. Maybe he would still have his goofy high school friends.

Drew shook his head, picking up his cup of coffee from the table. He always has these thoughts when he hasn't slept much and is still tired and overthinking. Sure, he has regrets in the past, but you know what they say. Live in the past and you'll break apart.

"Fake it 'til you make it," Drew muttered, putting down his cup of coffee and standing up to get ready for the day.

Liam silently cursed again, quickly handing the customer their order before they realized anything was out of the ordinary.

God.

It's been 3 years.

Why is that—that insufferable boy still a frequent thought on his mind?

Now, it's not like Liam is still holding any grudge against Drew. Really, he felt bad for avoiding him. But it was just too much for the teenage him, you know? To hang around someone so lovable yet manipulative. It gave him too much stress and it started affecting his grades, so he decided to avoid him. You can't blame him for that.

Even now, when Liam's doing fine—great, even, working at a cafe for a while so that he can move into a nicer place—he still thinks about Drew every now and then.

How could he not, when he's working in a cafe under Drew's company?

So close yet so far.

Sometimes, he feels regret for everything that happened between them. He would say he should've handled the situation better, but he knows he couldn't have. He did everything he could do as a mere teenager with issues and toxic friends.

Liam sighed, his mind distracted now. He went over to his colleague when no one was waiting at the counter.

"Hey, can you take care of the customers for a moment? I need to use the washroom," he asked. She nodded, and off he went to the bathroom, hoping to get his mind off Drew.

Henry carefully copy pasted the files, hoping that at least this time he wouldn't mess up anything. Once they transferred successfully, Henry breathed a sigh of relief. He laid his head on the desk, tired.

The job was well paying, really good actually, but it was stressful and painfully boring. Maybe he should have applied somewhere else, but whatever, can't back out now.

He played with his necklace as a stress relief. His mind went back to the past again. He pouted. Man, he wishes there was a way to make him stop constantly thinking about it.

But the anger, the heartbreak in Drew's eyes is forever imprinted on his brain.

He ignored the burning pain in the pit of his stomach. Really, he wasn't planning to give up on Drew, but after Zoey reformed and he fell in love with her so fast, it would've made it awkward for him to hang out with Drew, especially since Zoey cheated on him. He really hated his habit of just avoiding his problems, but maybe leaving Drew wasn't one of his worst decisions.

He played with the necklace on his neck, a smile forming on his lips. Even in these stressful times, the necklace Zoey gifted him makes him feel calmer. He was so lucky to be loved by her.

He sucked in a breath, new-found determination in his body, and went back to work.
