Chapter 31: Classical Latin Bores Me

From: Allicat

Did you know your sister knew archaic latin?

To: Allicat
woah.. no??, why does this matter exactly? and whats everyone doing i've been at home on my own for hours now .-.

From: Allicat
Scott and Stiles are in the preserve, jacksons ran off somewhere so they are sorting that and i am going to see if lydia can help me translate some things on the kanima, wanna join?

To: Allicat
uh depends where you are tbh, if im within a 10 mile radius of gerard i might punch him in the face

From: Allicat
oh god what did he do now? i'll just come over to you, lydia can give me a lift. see you in like 10 minutes

I stared at my phone, stunned by Allison's self-invitation to my house but I do the exact same so I trained her well.

I quickly run downstairs and into the kitchen to grab an apple- because I am apparently meant to start being healthier now. I don't see why it matters, I could eat all the junk food in the world and die of a heart attack in my mid forties and still live longer than I would if I lived in this town forever.

I need to get a place abroad or something, maybe Bali.

🌑

My phone vibrates again from inside my pocket. But this time it isn't just a text, but a phone call. Unknown number to be precise..

"Hello?" I answer slowly, taking a bite of my apple after and walking back upstairs to my room.

"Hi, Mia. It's the Sheriff." I freeze.

"Whatever it is, I didn't do it I swear. Unless this is about that Gera-,"

"You haven't done anything," He paused, "Have you?"

"Me? No," I laugh nervously, hearing my front door open. Allison and Lydia must be here already. "I would never, Noah."

"I was just wondering if you- if you know where Stiles is?" He hesitantly asks, making me raise an eyebrow.

"Uh, no I don't.. sorry. I've been at school and home all day." A tapping on my door makes me walk over and open it, I silently let Lydia and Allison in, them both taking seats on my bed.

"Wouldn't you have seen Stiles at school, though?"

"Shit." I muttered, "Y-yeah, but I had to leave early so I didn't see him."

"Oh.. Okay. I'll just try and get a hold of him again. Bye, Mia."

"Alright, bye Sheriff." I hang up, collapsing on my desk chair. "I'm a bad person." I huff.

"No.. You're just protecting your boyfriend." Allison coos.

"Boyfriend? You two are a thing now?" Lydia asks.

"Yep, so lets read some latin now. Yeah? You know, what you're here for? And not every detail of my life? Yeah? Lets do it."

"Well I'm not here for it, but I'm in the dark about something so the more I help the more I know, right?" Lydia said, making my eyes widen as she grins sarcastically.

"Uh-,"

"Okay, so Ms Morrell tried to translate this roughly for me," Allison cut in, opening up her laptop and clicking away. "But seeing as you know Archaic Latin, you can double check it for me." Allison said to Lydia.

"When did you learn that, by the way?" I ask Lydia.

"I got bored with classical Latin." She shrugged.

I stared at her in shock, "I'm barely passing French and you get bored of classical Latin to learn a dead language? Are you kidding?"

"Some are just more clever than others," She shrugged. "Show me what she translated so far," Lydia sighed, grabbing the laptop from Allison's lap. "What is this anyway?"

"A bestiary-,"

"A what?" I choke back my laughs trying to maintain my serious facade.

It's not working.

"It is a book," Allison states at me, "That has some weird creatures and stuff in it, it's Gerard's and I thought it was pretty cool." Allison easily lied.

"Right... Cool, yeah thats what it is." I nodded, standing up then moving to sit next to Lydia and resting my head on her shoulder as she reads away.

Lydia is in pretty dangerous territory right now, she could probably piece everything together just by reading this and adding up our secrecy.

People just get hurt when they find this out. Jackson, Lydia, Me, and the deaths a long the way.

And something tells me that it hasn't even started yet.

🌑

"Are you sure?" Allison asked Lydia, frowning.

Lydia has given us a brief run through of this- bestiary, and it is all as confusing as it seems.

But the Kanima has come up quite a lot.

"Ms. Morrell said that word means friend. The Kanima seeks a friend." Allison retorted, clearly doubting Lydia's genius.

"She was wrong. It means master." Lydia sighed, standing up. "That was horribly boring so I'm going to bed, Allison stay here or whatever."

"Night, Lyd." I called out to her as she leaves the room.

"The Kanima seeks a master." Allison muttered, still staring at the computer.

"I don't get it... How is that different from it-him seeking a friend?"

"Because a friend, they protect you. A master? They'll control him.. He's being controlled."

"Oh." I reply simply, blowing the air out of my cheeks. "Yeah, that- that changes things. We have some crazy controlling another crazy to kill people. Thats just fantastic."

"You okay?" Allison frowned.

I go to reply but she cuts me off, taking a seat next to me.

"I don't mean with the Kanima, you just seem so, so-,"

"Done?" I interrupt her.

She nods and looks at me expectantly, making me roll my eyes and groan.

"Do I have to? You guys always leave me out as it is, so if I tell you anything it stays in the vault."

"In the vault, got it."

"So I've just been thinking that, I don't even know really.. Everything is just so not-normal, you know? I'm just kind of doubting it all-us even. Why are we the ones having to sort this out? I mean we all- most- I have things I want to think about but I just can't," I sniffle, God I better not start crying.

"You want to know how many times I've spoken about the adoption thing since I found out?"

"Mia-,"

"Three times. And none of those times, none, was I given any answers. All I want is answers and thats the one thing I can't have, thats just how messed up the world is. I probably sound so, so selfish but I just want to focus on one thing sometimes you know? There's so much going on and don't get me wrong I want to help but I can't wait for it all just to be over." By the end of that I'm practically sobbing, I didn't even have the intention of opening up like that, but once I start pouring it out, it all comes out.

"It will be," Allison soothes me, pulling me into a hug. "It will be, Mia. We'll get through this and everything."

I just really hope she's right.
