From We Happy Few

London Bridge wasn't the only thing falling down.

Rubble, fire and death all around. To think that it was so different from just the day before. Although you suppose the change was from dying slowly, to being dead. Most people were anyways.
You walked through the crumbling streets, the smoke and smell of burning flesh rolling over Wellington Wells like a blanket, accompanied by Uncle Jack's last broadcast on replay.
You were getting out of here. The rucksack on your shoulder carrying everything you owned, although almost empty, felt like an unbearable weight that you would soon crumble under.
You knew this place was dying. You had known for a long time. Even before you had been chased from your home and into the Garden Districts. You had probably been aware since the first time you heard about "Foggy Jack".
Plague. Violence. Starvation. Wasn't the absence of those what made a functioning society? No use pondering that now, you had to keep moving.

You rounded a corner and your heart jumped out of your chest as you saw another person stand on the other side of the gate. You calmed down as you got a bit closer though, you knew that bowler hat. That stupid bowler hat who was worn by only one person.

"Victoria?"
The woman whipped around at the sound of your voice, startled. You walked closer yet, since it seemed she wouldn't attack you.
"Victoria Byng?"
You pushed the gate open and stood now face to face with the woman whose name you had cursed through tears.
Her eyes were darting over your form, taking in your disheveled state.
"What are you doing here?"
Her eyes closed and she took in a breath before looking around the ruined town.

"I... I did what had to be done" Her hands balled into fists at her side.

"You didn't... You're the one who unplugged their joy?" of all the people you knew, she would have been the last person you suspected to become a downer.

"I did, and I do not regret it!" She quickly got defensive, as if you were about to yell at her or something.

"Hey, I don't mind. Place has been going to shit for a long time" You looked around.
"Turns out people couldn't handle their own memories" You looked back at her. She was looking at the body of a person hanging from a lightpole.
"What did happen in the train station that day?"
Her face whipped back to yours.
"I've just heard so much about it, but not really enough to know what it means" You shrugged. She looked away once again.

"I forgot you're too young to remember. You're one of those who were born after" She mumbled. She took a shaky breath.
"We gave them the kids. All of them. Gone on a train. And I made them sing London bloody Bridge meanwhile" You could see tears forming in her eyes.
"I am a terrible person, aren't I? First I took their children, then their Joy" You grabbed her hands, squeezing them.

"You didn't let them all starve or die from the plague. The fact they couldn't live with the consequences of their actions are not your fault" She looked at you through wide, tearstained eyes. You felt something on her finger and you looked down. It was a ring, a fine piece of silver.
"You kept it?" You looked up at her.
She looked to the ring.

"I... I guess I did. I don't think... I don't think I wanted to forget you completely. Even after you left-"
You quickly pulled your hands from hers.

"I didn't leave Victoria. I was chased out of the village" You pulled back your hair to show a nasty scar on the side of your head. Her eyes widened even more at that.
"I believe that this is a souvenir I got from you" You stared her down for a couple of seconds, before she burst into tears. She crumbled to the ground, sobbing apologies. You fell to your knees too, holding her as she cried.
"It's alright. I don't blame you. At least not anymore. Joy does weird things to your brain" You murmured, seemingly calming her a little. She clung to you as if you would dissappear the moment she let you loose, her face buried in the crook of your neck. You hushed her as she calmed down completely, although she still didn't let you go. She looked up at you.

"Let us go. Get out of here. Together?"
She stared into your eyes as she clung to your shirt.

"Victoria-"

"Just us two, we will find a place. A place far away from here!" You loosened your grip on her, and hers only got tighter.

"I want to explore the world Victoria. I don't have any memories I need to hide from" You tried to reason. She may not have been herself completely, but she still had broken your heart. You stood up, pulling her with you.

"I'll- I'll go with you!" She hugged you tightly. It felt as if she was suffocating you.

"No. I am sorry, Vic" You pulled her to an arms length. Tears were rolling down her cheeks again. You couldn't bear to see her cry like that. You dried her tears with your thumb.
"I truly am sorry, but I want to do this alone" She grabbed your hand and pressed into it, and you continued to stroke her cheek.

"Please. I don't know what I would do without you now that I remember you. I... I love you. I always have" She kissed the palm of your hand and looked into your eyes, searching for a sign that her feelings were reciprocated. You frowned.

"Vic..."
You started, but she didn't let you finish.

"Listen, I would make you so happy. I would make sure that you would never need for anything. And I... I know that I hurt you. But I would do anything for a chance to prove I am worthy of loving you again" Her gaze was intense, burning into your soul. You sighed.

"Do you promise?" You asked, your voice barely above a whisper.

"I promise" She raspely swore. Your brought your hand to her hair, taking off that stupid, adorable bowler hat, and tugged her in for a kiss.
