Broken hands

To write with hands that break
Oh, how the cramping burdens my wrists
My fingers tense and my knuckles crack
Wearing a brace just to make art

I am an author
A poet
A damned artist
My hands are my means to live

But oh, the pain after each bloody word
Dipping into ice water after each paragraph
Throwing punches at bricks to mask the pain
My hands should not be hurting like this

I am a god damn author
My hands create life like no other
I will write until my hands no longer work
For the words on these pages mean more than my bones

I never say anything each time I feel the tender movements
Each time i crack a cramping bone
I move my wrist at a constant rate
God, please do not take my hands

I'll do anything, please, I need my hands
