Old Bandaids keep Friendships Together

I'd defend your name to the gods above
To the scum of the earth
To the demons below
To the higher power of which I pray to

I couldn't bare hear anyone speak poorly of you
I'd fight every man on earth to get your name out of their mouth
I'd start wars to keep your name clean in my presence
My loyalty lies with those whom I love

I'll never be so lucky

Tell me again how it's for your mental health
How you cannot defend my name even when coated in tar
How you'd do anything for everyone to love you
Even sit a watch as I'm torn apart
Maybe even join in if they'd only love you more

Please, be my humble guest
Agree with how horrible I am
Paint me in hues I hate to make yourself feel better
You seem to chalk it up as I can handle it

Of course I can
But does being able to handle something mean I enjoy it's company
I want my name to sparkle in your presence as yours does mine
I want you to admit we're friends to those who hate me

I've begun to realize it's not selfish of me
I deserve the same respect as I give
I would never dream of speaking ill of you with the ones who despise you
I can't even stomach being near to them
Let alone consider them my friend

Maybe I'm just not as great as them
Maybe you believe the words you say
I wonder if you'll ever admit it to my face
That you'd rather watch my name rot
That you'd rather join in and laugh
That you'd rather them spread lies about me
That you'd rather listen to them bash me
That you'd rather them shit on me
Than admit that we're friends

Because you want it to be easier
Because you'd do anything to be loved
Because you want them to shut up
Badly enough to pretend we are nothing

Can an old bandaid close a gaping wound forever
