Keep Fighting

Upon arriving at their building, Nakano and Mikey stared out at the sky, watching the light snowfall. They talked a bit about the events that happened while Nakano was with Hakkai and Yuzuha. Mikey told her about Takemichi and Hina's break up, but they made up tonight.

Though, he left out the part where he had that private chat with her brother.

"Takemichi apologizes a lot, because he fucks up a lot. But he knows how to make up for those screw ups now. He fights with everything he's got, even if it isn't much." A small smile forms on her face as a hint of pride swells in her. "He's grown a lot. And I hope to do the same."

Silence falls upon the two, but it's not awkward at all. It's comforting, just being in each other's presence. As the white wind blows past them, a thought comes to Mikey's mind.

"Kano-chin? Did you get caught on purpose?"

She glances at him, to see a worried look on his face. "What do you mean by that?"

"I dunno, it's just... Did you and Takemitchy plan this? I just don't understand why he wouldn't tell me you went missing. He obviously knew, but he didn't tell me. I know you disappear a lot, but I have no idea what for. Is it because you go on these weird missions by yourself? Why do you keep putting yourself in danger like that?"

She can barely keep up with all his questions. Pair that with his desperate sounding voice.

'When you live a dangerous life, you tend to become accustomed to dealing with dangerous situations.'

That's what comes to her mind, but she knows what conversation that's gonna lead to if she says it out loud. She doesn't want to burden him with all the stupid details. Besides, she's still trying to get over her past as well.

"We didn't plan this. I got caught by accident. It was a shitty move on my part, but I got out just fine, so it's nothing to worry about now."

Mikey just stares at her, shock in his eyes. He can't believe what he's hearing. 'Nothing to worry about'? The fuck does she mean by that??

She almost died.

She.

Almost.

Died.

She caught a glimpse of death multiple times, but she brushed it off as if it were a part of her daily routine.

She was suffering, he had no idea, and she ended up having to save herself. Who knows what she had to endure. He doesn't even want to ask, not wanting to make her relive those days in captivity.

A frown appears on his face as he remembers the chains that dragged behind her. The injuries she had. The way she just shrugs it off like it's a normal thing. She may be strong, but she could still be hurting.

"I'm sorry I couldn't protect you. I'm sorry you had to suffer alone. Seeing you hurt, hurts me more than I can express, Kano-chin." He holds her hands tightly, but not so much that it causes her pain. "I promised I wouldn't let anyone hurt you again. But I... Failed you."

Nakano hears that, and all her senses spike. Those thoughts come rushing back to her. Bloody Halloween, after she had taken out all of the former Moebius members. She realized what she was, and knew that it wasn't what Vincent wanted her to become.

But why is Mikey apologizing and saying he failed? Moreover, why did he say he failed her?

"You failed no one. You sure as hell have no obligation to me. It was my own fault I got captured, so I had to get the hell out myself. You don't have to get yourself involved in my messes when I can clean them up myself."
