Y/n's pov

The next morning, Mike and I met Lucas at the school early, just like Mike had asked.

Mike held out some straws.

Neither Dustin nor Will were at school yet and Mike wanted to look in the dumpsters for dart, but obviously no one was going to volunteer so we each took a straw, Mike drawing the last one. Lucas had taken the shortest one.

He groaned and took off his backpack.

He jumped onto an old milk crate, then vaulted himself over the edge and into the dumpster.

There was a disgusting squish as he landed.

"Oh, gross!" Lucas said.

"I can't believe he's doing this." Max said, skating up behind me.

Lucas tossed a garbage bag out of the dumpster, just narrowly missing my head.

"Watch it, Lucas!" I said.

"Sorry." He said with a weak smile.

Just then, Dustin walked towards us, having just arrived at the school.

"Hey guys, what the-" he said as another garbage bag was launched from the dumpster, this time almost hitting Dustin.

"We're looking for Dart." Mike explained.

Lucas continued to toss a few more bags out of the dumpster before he hopped out, looking disgusted.

"Sup, Y/n." He said, for no reason at all.

"Oh, gross, you stink!" I said.

"You try getting in there." Lucas shrugged.

Lucas tossed me a stick, and Mike, Dustin and Max each picked one up and started poking around the garbage bags.

There was a lot of rotten lunches, and some failed tests, but no Dart.

We heard the bell ring and dropped our sticks, walking to Mr. Clarke's class.

"Where's Will?" Dustin asked from beside me as we walked down the hallway.

"I don't know, we didn't see him." I said.

We took our seats as Mr. Clarke started writing on the board.

"All living things, from complex mammals to single-celled organisms, instinctively respond to danger. Expose a bacterium to a toxic chemical, and it will flee. Or deploy some other defence mechanism. We're very much the same. When we encounter danger, our hearts start pounding. This is a reaction we call... fear." Mr. Clarke explained to us as we listened tentatively.

"Sometimes we experience adrenaline, or sweaty palms, but these are results of a physical and emotional state, fear. One thing is for certain though." Mr. Clarke said.

"It can save your lives." He finished.
