Chapter 22

I rushed into my driveway and luckily didn't bump into 'Mason' on the way home. God knows what would happen if I did. Would they take me away? Would I run fast enough to escape? Pushing the thoughts out of my crammed head, I entered my house and sat in the living room next to Chase, which surprised me, since he should be in uni now.

"Hey what are you doing here?"

"Oh hey Val, I came for the weekend to catch on, well, everything to be honest."

"Oh right, yeah."

I glanced around the room, eyeing all the bags laying on the carpet.

"Are you... Staying for a while or? "

An extremely worried look covered his happy facial features and he quickly looked down at his feet which were tapping vigorously on the floor.

"Ok, so here's the actual reason I'm home. Mum and dad don't know so you better not spill. I needed to tell someone anyways, but I didn't want our parents to be the first to know. I wouldn't be able to look them in the face its that b-"

"Oh come on Chase get to the point!"

He always does this, blabbers on about unessessary information. Ever since we were little, he would never get to the part I was waiting to hear.

"Yeah sorry. I basically... Dropped out of university."

I decided not to answer hoping it was a stupid joke or something. I've already got enough on my mind, and so do mum me dad. This would upset them a lot. I imagined the look on their faces. Misery. Disappointment. Anger. Then only did I realise I hadn't replied to Chase who was waiting for an anger reply.

"Ok, stop the jokes, what's the actual news?"

"That is the actual news..."

His voice trailed off into barely a whisper and my heart dropped. How could he just leave like that?

"Oh my god Chase tell me you didn't! This is so bad, why did you leave?"

"I failed my second year so they said I have to sit it again or leave... Mum and dad could never pay the fees all over again! Remember how much they struggled before it went up?"

My mind wondered back to the day my parents lost all their money because they hadn't paid their mortgage. Their salary was frozen and they could do nothing, so the few pennies they had, was also taken away.

"We have to tell mum and dad"

"No please Valerie not yet. I need some time to think of an easy way to tell them."

"Hmm, let me think... Maybe just tell them! Chase the longer you keep it in, the more guilt will build up in your throat. Trust me, it's now or never."

"Ugh, don't go round using quotes on me."

I gave him a serious stare to confirm I wasn't messing around.

"Alright, I'll go find them."

Mum and dads reaction was exactly as expected, but slightly calmer really. But surprisingly they didn't bring up the topic after the harsh scolding.

I made my way upstairs and sat on the pile of clothes my mum had asked to fold since she was down. I started with the shorts and made my way to the last t-shirt in about 20 minutes. I finished quicker than usual and decide to treat myself by eating dads home made ice cream.

Just as I was walking down the stairs, the landline rang.

"I'll get it!" Dad shouted as i saw him run to the phone in the kitchen.

"Hello, yes? Erm yes of course hold on."

He covered the microphone of the device and whispered,

"It's for you, but doesn't sound like a familiar or friendly voice."

I squinted, thinking who it could be before taking the phone out of dads hands.

When I heard the voice, the whole world stopped.

"Guess who?"

Anyways smallish chapter sorry! But as I said previously (I think) I'm gonna do short chapters and quick/weekly updates. Maybe delayed because of exams so sorry,,
