The Spit - Port Cressida

The cat was heavy and warm in my arms. It was a welcome relief from the damp cold night air that permeated my clothes and nipped at my skin. I would kill for a nice warm fire and a big fluffy bathrobe.
We walked through the muddy roads and headed deeper into the Spit's underbelly. The streets were busy, and I couldn't help but notice dozens of hungry eyes staring at the cat.
I gave the cat a reassuring stroke and whispered, "No one is going to eat you, Kitty."
The cat let out a small rumbling purr in thanks.
I glanced across at Jacques, who was keeping a watchful eye on me.
"The cat is attracting too much attention," he said.
He was right. Fresh blood was a rarity, and a cat made a hearty meal for one.
"We should get off the main road and take the backstreets," I said.
Jacques hesitated for a second and then slipped an arm around my waist, "Stay close. I don't want to lose you".
He guided me into a dark labyrinth of alleyways and sidestreets. There were fewer people here, but there were still people. Groups of women lingered in the shadows of doorways, watching us pass by. Jacques' grip tightened around my waist as he made a point to stare straight ahead and not make eye contact with the women.
