Jacques took me back up to my room, where I waited and waited. By this time, the freak thunderstorm had disappeared and the weather was back to its normal freezing self. Sitting on the window sill, I thought about all that had happened tonight with Casper, Rudolph and Jacques.
There were many secrets and lies, I was struggling to make sense of it all. I wanted to believe that Casper was a good person... but after seeing the way Rudolph acted tonight, grovelling on the floor and pleading for his very life, it made me think very differently of Casper. He was keeping secrets from me, like the woman in the gatehouse and what really happened the night of the car accident.
I pressed my head against the cold window pane and stared out across the expansive grounds. My eyes drifted to the woods and my shoulder started to ache.
What the hell had I encountered in those woods?
The pain in my shoulder intensified. I rubbed at the skin where the scratch marks had been and continued to watch the dark tree line. Something was in those woods - something that hadn't wanted me to get to the gatehouse. Perhaps if I was a normal person, then I would have stayed clear of the woods. Instead, I would sit in my room, waiting for Casper's orders... but I wasn't that person. I needed to know the truth. Sally was missing, Mia was sick, and Casper was hiding something. There was something wrong with this situation and I couldn't rest until I had figured it out.
