The couple had spent most of their afternoon roaming around the streets of Paris as well as visiting the very popular and well recommended Louvre Museum. Liam spent the whole time rushing to his wife, who was way too excited about the beautiful ancient artifacts. Despite it being exhausting, Liam was more than happy to follow his wife just to keep that wide smile on her face.

At seven o’clock the couple visited Pont des Arts. The high architectural structure allowed the couple to see how gorgeous Paris is in the evening light.

“You know, this bridge is where lovers lock their love.” Liam informs.

Diamond nods. “I know.”

“It’s a bit funny since we aren’t really…you know.”

Diamond chuckles humorlessly, the evening light shining on her face.

She turns her head to face Liam, who is busy staring ahead to notice her action.

“What are we, Liam?”

“We’re married, of course.” He mumbles.

Diamond shuffles slightly. “No. I mean, what are we? Putting our arrangement aside.” She clarifies.

Liam’s eyebrows lift slightly, contemplating an answer.

“I guess we are…friends?”

Diamond nods softly with a small smile forming. “Friends.” She confirms.

Friends.

The couple continued their walk on the bridge in silence. The two were busy in their thoughts, thinking about how they got into this position in the first place.

Neither of them can believe that a mere misunderstanding and a case of miscommunication caused such an uproar that needed to be covered up with a marriage. They often wondered that they didn’t fight enough. They did not refuse this marriage with enough strength. Maybe if they did, they wouldn’t be caught up in this. If they had managed to fight against their parents, maybe they would both be living their separate lives without a complicated relationship.

What if there is a reason why they were put into this marriage. A deeper reason that neither of them have figured out.

Maybe they have, but they don’t want to accept it.

"Excuse me?" An unknown voice calls out.

The couple turns their backs to face where the sound came from. An elderly man stood a few steps from them holding a golden lock in his hands.

“Would you like to purchase a lock for your love?” He questions, with an encouraging smile on his face.

Liam and Diamond both share a look, already knowing the answer to the question.

“It is quite alright, sir. We are just passing by to see the river.” Diamond denies respectfully.

The man looks between the couple as if trying to read them.

“Are you sure?” His voice drawls out after a long silence.

“Quite.” Liam responds. “Maybe next time?”

Next time?

The mans’ shoulders lift up, satisfied with the answer. “Yes. I will keep this lock specifically for you two. I have a feeling I will be seeing you once more in the near future.”

The couple stares at the elder mutely.

“Until next time.” He waves off leaving them alone once more.

The couple continued their walk, both distracted by their thoughts, to pay attention. The two thought back to the past, remembering what took place. A simple misunderstanding caused all of this to happen. Diamond and Liam were stuck in a loveless marriage because of miscommunication. Sometimes, they wondered whether they hadn’t fought enough against the wedding. Maybe if they denied it harder, their parents would have left them alone.

Maybe…There was an underlying reason why this marriage occurred. Maybe the couple knew that reason but refused to acknowledge it.
