White is all I see when my eyelids slowly bat open, and my vision comes together. I feel the softness of a mattress underneath my body, and sounds come from different directions, attacking me all at once.

I try to sit up carefully but am held back down to what I now realize is a hospital bed. In an instant, I'm pulling against the handcuffs around my wrists that hold me down to the bed.

"Get me out of this!" I shout, struggling against the cold handcuffs and yelling loud enough for someone to come in and remove them. I'm not insane and shouldn't be tied down as if I'm a threat either. I'm the victim here.

I relax when a nurse rushes in with a sweet smile. There's a little grey in her short hair when she walks up to me.

"Well, hello, sleepy head. How are you feeling?" She says, checking the monitors to the side of the bed that are hooked up to me.

"Where am I, and where's Barbie?" I ask, ignoring her question because I don't remember anything.

"Relax, honey. You're at one of the best hospitals just a few hours away from the prison, and my daughter is fine," the nurse says, turning to me while still holding that smile of hers.

"You're Barbie's mom?" I ask, taking her fully in and seeing the resemblance in her eyes and smile. She nods her head slightly while checking the fluid bag that hangs next to the bed.

"Yes, she's my babygirl. I've been worried sick about her since everything. Her father and I watch the news like clockwork, hoping we would see her on screen. Niles told us he found her, and..." She keeps that grin but slowly loses it when she turns to look at me. Her expression changes to seriousness when she stares into my eyes.

"She was hit a few times in the face earlier," she pauses to admit, looking up and breathing slowly while trying to contain her emotions.

"She told me two, male guards punched her twice in the face because she snapped at them. Said they tried to sexually assault her, and they—thank God—didn't, but they could have. That's what's so terrifying; they could have done those things to her..." Her train of thought fades, and she sniffs while changing her stance.

"Anyway, she has a couple of bruises; she'll recover. We are worried about the baby. As of now, everything is fine, but the doctor is worried about her health considering she hasn't been given the proper vitamins and nutrition since she's been locked up."

She comes and sits on the edge of my hospital bed, slowly turning to me to show a side of herself that other patients don't get to see.

"What are they doing to you in that prison? What else has happened there? I've already filed a report against the prison, and Niles is going up there first thing in the morning to check on the conditions. There's no way my daughter is going to be beaten, almost raped, and go back to the place it can happen again."

This may be my only chance to tell anyone outside of the prison the truth about what's happening inside. I don't waste time. Even though I don't know her, I tell her everything, and she listens closely.

I tell her everything quickly as if one of the guards could come in and take me back to Hell with them. I watch her brown eyes lose that softness when I tell her everything, and I mean everything.
