"What do you mean?" Adrienne gasped as she struggled to hold back the tears that were brimming in her eyes. The fantasy she had built up in her mind was nothing but a lie, and now she felt like her heart was being riped out. All this time, she had thought he cared for her, but now she realized that he only cared about himself. She felt numb, like she couldn't even breathe, let alone speak. Her whole body was trembling with shock and disbelief.

"You should have signed the contract, send it to my secretary." He turned his gaze to a stunned Colette, ignoring the two women who looked as if they'd been hit by a truck. Without bothering to hear any further excuses or pleas, he delivered his message and turned to the emotional wreck that was Adrienne.

"Do not tell them what didn't happen. And be sure to to tell that sleazy boyfriend of yours that the financial records are telling on him." He whispered in to her ear before straightening up and adjusting his suit jacket. With a sly smirk on his face, he walked out of the room, eyes cold and expressionless, leaving the three women in a state of shock.

Giselle walked out of the room with the poise of a queen, her hips swaying with grace and her steps falling with elegance. Colette watched her leave, mouth agape, feeling both impressed and slightly envious of the woman's grace under pressure. Turning to her daughter, she saw the pain and confusion etched on her face.

"Mom, please leave me alone right now," Adrienne sniffed as she wiped away the tears that refused to stop. Lowering her head, she could barely meet her head, she could barely meet her mother's gaze. Colette looked at her daughter, feeling a deep pang of sympathy. She wanted to reach out and give her a hug, but decided to let her be. Turning away, she slowly closed the door behind her, her heart heavy for her daughter's pain.

The door closed with a soft click, leaving Adrienne alone in the room. She slowly wiped the tears from her face, her expression shifting from sadness to steely resolve. Her eyes glinting with cold anger, like a demon's gaze from the underworld. Reaching for her phone, her fingers worked the screen furiously, as if channeling her anger into tapping the virtual buttons.

She let her phone slip from her fingers, and hit the floor, while she kept her hand behind her head, closing her eyes as she focused on solving the problem. Her outward appearance was calm and collected, but underneath the surface her blood was boiling with anger, and frustration. Behind closed eyes, a storm raged on, with thoughts and emotions swirling in a tempestuous maelstrom.

The peace and quiet of her simple darkness was abruptly broken by the shrill ring of her phone, startling her from her moment of introspection. She slowly leaned over despite her aching back, her gaze still icy cold as she answered the call and waited for the person on the other end to speak.

"I'll be heading to Scottsdale, then," She said with a smile that was anything but friendly, her eyes glinting with cold, calculating malice. There was an eerie stillness to her, as if the air around her had frozen, as chillingly silent as a graveyard. Her black-coated fingernails, perfect and sharp as talons, drummed against the silky hospital bed as she dropped her phone, a deadly promise in her gaze. No one would come between her and the man she wanted.

"Hey, honey, how are you?" Jefferson burst into the room, his tie hanging loose around his neck as he looked disheveled and out of sorts, like a zoo animal that had broken out of its enclosure. Adrienne rolled her eyes as soon as she saw him, her hand gripping the bed sheets tightly as if she were restraining herself from wasting her mental energy on him.

"My darling, how's your back feeling? Are you in pain? Would you like me to give you a back rub?" Jefferson fussed around her, peppering her with questions and refusing to give her a moment of peace. His eyes were glassy with worry, but Adrienne's patience was reaching its breaking point. Each of his questions felt like a needle jabbing at her already frayed nerves.

"Jeff, baby, can you please make me grits" She cooed, her eyes wide and doe-like as she looked up at him. Her fingers caressed his arm, a smile painted on her lips, but her insides felt like they were folding in on themselves. Calling him "baby" felt like a violation, a betrayal to her true self. Even the hand that touched his arm felt slimy, her skin itching with disgust.

"Of course, I'll do anything for you, baby," he said with a smile that didn't quite reach his eyes. There was a moment of hesitation, and then he gently laid Adrienne down on the bed, adjusting her pillow as if she were a delicate piece of china. His eyes were full of warmth and happiness, but as soon as he turned away, his expression hardened. The fake smile fell from his face, replaced by an annoyed scowl.

As soon as the door clicked shut, Adrienne's fake smile melted away. She no longer needed to pretend to be sweet and agreeable. She was relieved to be free of his constant pestering for at least a few hours. All she wanted, all she thought about, was how to get the man she truly wanted and get rid of the nuisance she called a boyfriend. Her mind was raced with plans and schemes, and she felt a thrill of excitement at the thought of her impending triumph.
