"Why do you fight them?" The night creature's limpid eyes held him in place.

The vampire  bared his fangs. "I will not be questioned by a shackled beast."

"Yet you come into this prison to listen to my songs every day." The night creature persisted.

"Because you're a freak of nature." The vampire glared. "And you intrigue me."

"I could say the same about you."

"Do not mock me, beast." The vampire hissed. "I could shift through your prison bars and bite out your throat this very minute. The Abbot thinks you're a fluke, he would not miss you."

"You could, but you will not." The night creature held the bars with a clawed hand. "You are as much a prisoner here as I am, yet you refuse to break free of your chains. You do not fight. You do not want to remember. Why?"

The vampire snarled. He could have walked away, he could have bitten out the reluctant demon's throat, but its words struck his cold dead heart.

"Because I fear what my memories might reveal. That all that I know, and all that I am, is a lie."
