The Malbeast and how it's defeated by Amalie is based on French folklore of the region. In legend, the Malebête terrorized the countryside of Angles until it was tamed by a holy priest, who led to the town's church. The beast climbed up the church and turned to stone on its roof.
The statue of the beast can still be seen on top of the church of Notre-Dame-des-Anges today.
