Kansas 1982-
A saddened man, stood before a beautiful woman wearing all black. His eyes were tired, heavy, his skin worn out and his shaking hands starting to lose patience. The grin on the woman's face, infuriated him into throwing his bottle of Jack Daniel's whiskey across the gravel path underneath him.
"Wow, Joseph Hartley does have a temper when he doesn't get what he wants." The demon smirked at him again, not flinching at his outburst of rage. He panted angrily as he stared at her. "You used to be the best of the best didn't you, I've heard the stories. You and your daddy used to traipse all around demon land. And now you've given it up for what? A cancer nurse and her empty wish for a child?" The demons laughter only infuriated Joseph further as he let out a bow of anger.
"I can't create children, I'm sorry." She held her hands up in defeat.
"You're a crossroads demon, you make deals. You can make anything happen!"
He had long given up hunting, the life he had been raised into for Diane, a beautiful woman he'd met and instantly fallen in love with. They married and the only thing missing from their lives now was a baby, something they had been burdened to not receive.
"Sorry, baby making isn't in the job description. If you make your own, I can offer you a much more striking deal." She smiled, her eyes glistening to a colour not clear enough under the night sky.
"That's the point, my wife and I, we cannot conceive!" Joseph shouted, his voice this time slightly pitchier. Knowing that he wasn't going to be able to get what he wanted from this demon he looked down and shook his head. "Why did I bother coming here, I don't do this anymore." He muttered to himself before stepping towards the demon. He'd made sure to entrap it in a devils trap, and was now beginning to see how stupidly desperate he had been to attempt to make a deal with a demon. He began to utter an exorcism that he had recited as a child but the demon did not move a muscle. Instead, she turned her head to the sky and frowned. "Something is coming." She said, her voice full of alert.
"Stop trying to stall me." Joseph shook his head, almost falling back with the movement in hushed drunken stupor. The demon rolled its eyes and then slammed her foot down, the devils trap breaking as she did. Joseph didn't even have the time to react before the demon clouded out of its meat suit, soaring across the dark skies.
Joseph shook his head again, before something bright appeared before him. He reached up, shielding his eyes and started to pace backwards to escape whatever was approaching but a high pitched ringing sound caused him to drop down to his knees, clutching at his ears in pain. His screaming and pain died down as the light around him softened into the silhouette of a man, who then stepped out before Joseph, holding down a hand to help him up.
"What are you!" Joseph shouted, not moving his eyes away from the figure before him.
"I'm an angel of the lord. And I am here to answer your prayer."
Elsewhere, a few hundred yards away, a priest was exiting a bar after a brief evening visit. He paid his tab and said goodbye to the bartender before opening the door to leave. It was cold outside, colder than it had been when he arrived which ensured his visit hadn't been as brief as he'd thought. He sighed and started walking across the loosely gravelled ground, until he saw something bright in the distance. What looked like a man, falling down to his knees and what sounded like shouts of pain. The priests eyes widened, and he formed a cross across his chest in the hopes that what he was seeing before him was the divine, an angel entering the earth to walk amongst them. But his vision was soon blocked by a cloud of black smoke which shot directly down into his throat, instantly debilitating him.
