He closed his door, exhaling in bitterness. He took his hand, jerking it as he scratched his head and tossed his sack over on a counter.

Work was busy and people were screwing up their faces at him again and raising their voices over trivial thing. A day hadn't gone by where a person would refuse to read by themselves what an item cost. He would try to reason with them, but it just made them and his coworkers frowned at him. His single highlight of the day when an old man actually took his time to listen to him and fixed his own problem instead of giving trouble.

He was about to pass out on a couch when he saw a mysterious item tossed on the counter. An obsidian octagon with golden swirls on the edges. He stared at it for a minute before shouting, "Hey, Mel?"

"Yeah?" his sister asked.

"Where did this box come from?"

"An old guy showed up; said its for you!"

For him? He took the objective into his hand, weighing it. It hardly felt over a pound. He shrugged and opened the strange box since he couldn't return the gift. Inside laid a black pin with half of a grey butterfly. His eyebrow raised at the strange piece, but the young man fit it on his belt loop anyway. Once secure, he was ready to relax when he came face to face with an enigma.

A creature — lavender with fairy wings floated in front of his face. Its large round eye stared into his, furrowed in concentration. "You're. . . different. . . " it mumbled. The boy just nodded, not understanding what was in front of him. "You're not startled?" The young man shook his head as he tried to place a name for the strange being. "Not even surprised? Flabbergasted? Unable to comprehend this unfathomable creature before you?"

"What does flabbergasted mean first?"

"Surprised, but at a higher level." it answered.

He nodded to himself when Mel entered the room. "Jace, I'm going to the store to get some coffee. You need—"  The two conversing turned to her and she was wide eyed. He stared back as her body began to edge away from them. His own heart raced and his lungs were built up with compression. She screamed at the top of her lungs. He felt an urge to copy. "What is that thing?!"

The said thing quickly floated towards her, a gentle smile on its face. "It's all right. I'm not going to hurt you. I'm a butterfly; see my wing?" She stared at it. The boy's heartbeat slowed and his chest felt loose. "I'm Nooroo. A Kwami. I'm a miraculous for your brother. I was chosen because there are powers being abused and your city is in need of our help and gifts."

She gulped and turned her eye to her brother.  "You're seeing this too, right?"

"Yeah, I am."

She stared at it again, it still smiled softly at her. "We're not insane. Am I going insane? Oh god. Why am I asking you?"

"Calm down. You're completely fine mentally. In fact, you have a fully healthy about of control of yourself." it said, resting its little arms on her arm, but the action only caused her to flinch on contact. "I'll be assisting your brother on his missions, so he'll be fine. You don't need to worry about this. You seem stressed enough."

She couldn't respond. His heart was still beating very fast and blood was rushing to his head. Next, his sister fainted. His throat lodged and his feet launched towards her. His hands clammed and forehead sweated. "Ugh. . . What do I do?" Jace asked.

Nooroo looked around the home frantically. "I don't know what to do with a fainted human. Oh my goodness! I caused a human to fall unconscious! This is terrible."

The young man filled his sister and pulled her onto the couch, having her lay as though asleep. "Maybe she'll wake up," he murmured.

"I hope so," the creature said. "I've never had a human fall unexpectedly before. I thought you all loved butterflies."

Jace shook his head, ignoring the being. "Why is my face so warm and wet?"

"You're nervous," the lavender ball said. "It's a normal reaction to a sudden event that might have not turned out for the better. And when you wanted to scream is what your sister felt." The boy glanced at the creature with a confused look. The thing sighed to itself. "Let's start over."

"Uh huh. . . "

"I'm the butterfly miraculous, Nooroo. I'm a Kwami. It's like a fairy, you could say but I'm far stronger. My main ability is to be able to sense when a person's emotion on the most extreme level that it can be like telekinesis. With insight to emotion, I get insight to motive I'd I have more context. I can also manipulate emotion if need be, but that is only for dire emergency."

The holder of the pin only stared at the self-claimed supernatural spirit. "Weird."

_______

After reading some of the Science of Evil, I was extremely interested in writing a character that had very low amounts of empathy and how it would effect them. I also then read more on MLB and saw that the Butterfly Miraculous is all up on sensing emotion.

So what if the person who struggles with reading emotions is paired with someone who has no gates when it comes to others.
