(A/N short chapter where Kara realizes the world isn't as friendly as she might have hoped)

Kara hadn't really experienced bigotry before. She was glad of that. Unfortunately, something had to happen eventually. It happened in the park. She was skipping gleefully down the trail, holding hands with Lena on a particularly sunny day in April. It had finally stopped raining, and she was glad to get out of the house and do something outdoors.

Lena smiled and walked briskly to keep up with her happy girlfriend. Kara's eyes shown like the sun. They passed a bench that held a rather angry looking young man, who looked to be about in his late twenties. Suddenly, he threw his coffee onto Kara, muttering some slur starting with the letter d under his breath. Kara stopped, completely dumbstruck. What had just happened.

Lena dropped Kara's hand and rounded angrily on the man, shouting things that Kara couldn't quite register. The man smirked until Lena slapped him in the face. He grabbed Lena's wrist. That put Kara back into action, and she stepped between the two, trying to give her most menacing glare even though there was hot coffee dripping down her blouse. It seemed to work because the man took a hard look at her, scoffed, and walked away.

"Are you ok?" Lena asked quietly, putting her hands on Kara's tense shoulders.

Kara turned around to look at Lena, her big blue eyes brimming with tears. Lena gave her a sad smile and mentioned something about getting her cleaned up. Kara nodded and walked back to L-Corp, her entire body feeling numb.

Jess' eyes grew wide when she saw Kara stumble in, her hand clutching Lena's like it was life or death. Lena looked at her assistant with fire in her eyes and mumbled something under her breath about homophobic assholes. Jess nodded with understanding and announced that she would send up a clean shirt and a wet rag. Lena thanked her and guided Kara into the elevator.

"Why are people so mean?" Kara asked blankly, staring at Lena with hopelessness in her eyes.

Lena gave Kara yet another sad smile and directed for her to sit down on the couch.

"Some people just can't stand to see other people happy. It's stupid, I know, but that's just how the world works, love."

"I don't want it to work that way," Kara sniffled. "Why can't people just let others live their lives?" She broke down.

Lena put her arms around Kara and murmured sweet nothings in her ear until Jess brought up the fresh shirt, as promised, as well as one for Lena, whom she had correctly predicted would end up with coffee down her front as well. Kara tasted salt as fat teardrops continued to roll down her cheeks. She was not sure why she's so surprised that something like this happened. It was only a matter of time. Still, it hurt.

"I know it hurts," Lena whispered in her ear.

"Have you experienced backlash? Lena, did something happen and you didn't tell me?"

Lena sighed, putting her hands in Kara's hair and playing with it gently.

"Of course I've experienced backlash, Kara. I'm the CEO of a major company. But it was nothing I couldn't handle. Honestly, I expected it to be worse. Being gay isn't nearly as bad for business as being a Luthor is."

"Lena, when you're hurting, you have to tell me."

"Look, I promise you, I wasn't hurting. I'm not hurting. I was hurting before I met you, but I don't need to hurt anymore. And you don't need to either, I promise. Who cares what some idiot in a park thinks? He's just going to live a sad life, with a heart full of hate."

"I guess you're right," Kara said, mustering a smile. "I don't care what anyone thinks, as long as I have you. Well, besides Alex and Winn, and J'onn, and Eliza, and other people that I care about. Actually, now that I think about it, I don't care what strangers think as long as I have you."

"You really know how to make a girl swoon," Lena said, rolling her eyes.

Kara smiled. This time, the smile reached her eyes. She gave Lena a deep kiss, biting down on Lena's lower lip. Lena let out a little moan.

"I may not be the best with words, but I can make you do that," Kara grinned.

Lena chuckled embarrassedly.

"Alright, love, let's get you cleaned up. I can't send you back to Snapper with coffee on your shirt." Kara's stomach growled. "And I guess I'll have to feed you, too. We never got to that food cart in the park, did we? Is pizza ok? I have leftovers."

"Pizza's great," Kara assured her. "Thanks, Lena. I'd put up with a thousand bigots for you.

"Let's hope that for the sake of your wardrobe, you won't have to."
