~Travis's PoV~
"No, Travis! You're not supposed to put the eggs in the dry ingredients. You absolute dolt." Zane grabs the bowl in front of me and clutches it near him, protecting it as if it were his child.
"Okay, look, I don't know much about baking, soo..." I put my hands up in defense, slightly inching away from the overprotective Zane. He just stares at me, squinting his eyes, and I could almost feel the fake disappointment shooting along with it.
"Well," he finally relaxes and sets the bowl baby down, "at least I stopped you just in time before you messed up the whole thing." He makes three sounds that are along the lines of tsk tsk tsk and gets the other bowl we were working on, and puts only the whites of the eggs in it. He keeps mumbling on about how I should know they don't mix until later and that I should be more careful. I only chuckle at this.
It's been about a week since our kiss, and sadly, we haven't shared another since. Sometimes, I even try to sneak another one in at opportune times, but it never works out. But, it hasn't really gotten awkward. The only things that have happened that are remotely close to awkward are when I bring up the fact that we've kissed, and Zane gets super flustered about it. Then I'd laugh, and he'd yell at me or smack me. The hits don't even hurt, though. I seriously doubt he'd want to physically hurt me on purpose.
There are times where we'd get very flirty too, and it wouldn't be all me -- Zane would partake in the act as well. And before those times, it would never even cross my mind that he could actually be good at flirting; even have a few pick up lines of his own. Once, Dante walked in while we were rather close to each other, and right in the middle of a flirting session. He had to cough awkwardly, and that itself made us shoot to opposite sides of the couch. Dante only doubled over in laughter, with both of our faces burning.
We also haven't really talked about actually making it official. Heck, the only dates we've been on are the ones before the kiss. We aren't officially dating... yet. I'm determined to ask him out and then ask him to be mine, but I'm not entirely sure. I mean, it's pretty obvious that we both like each other, so the chances of me being rejected are rather low. But there's always other reasons he could say no, and I'd understand, obviously, but that'd still bring my spirit down. I suppose I'm afraid of rejection, but then again, isn't everyone?
Sometimes, late at night, the scenes of our kiss and when he left that night. I would get so motivated to ask him out right then and there that I'd nearly jump out of bed and walk over to his house to realize it was almost midnight. Not only that, but my fear of rejection would come back to haunt me.
"Okay, now we mix the two together," Zane speaks, snapping me out of my small reverie. He takes the two bowls and pours their contents into a bigger bowl. "Here, you mix while I preheat the oven." He passes me a wooden spoon, although I know he knows we own an electric mixer.
"Why not just use the electric one?" I ask, confused as to why he'd use a normal wooden spoon.
"'Cause electric mixers are for scrubs. Now start mixing!" He urges, while he turns his back to me and faces the oven.
I start moving my arm in circular motions so that I could get every part of the mixture. I mumble little bits of phrases along the lines of why he didn't just let me use the other mixer.
"Boy, I know you ain't talking about me." Zane calls over his shoulder, his tone laced with sass.
This is a new level of sass coming from him.
I decide to provoke him further.
"And what if I am?" I say, a dumb grin plastered on my face.
"Don't you try me, hoe. I will go Mexican on you!" He turns fully, wagging a finger in the air. He also has a grin on, on the brink of laughter. "Don't make me get the chancla!" And with that, he looses it and starts laughing again.
"You need to stop hanging around Aphmau I swear." I say, chuckling along with him.
"No, I need to stop hanging around you. I was not this sassy until I started hanging out with you more." He jokes.
"Don't try to pin this on me! Aphmau's sassier than me."
"Uh huh, likely story." He walks back over to my side, starting to pour the mixed bowl into a cupcake tray. I've already put the little colorful wrappers into the slots.
"I am not!"
"You are!"
"Am not!"
"Are!"
"Not!"
"Are!"
I pause for a second, saying, "Why are we so childish?"
"I mean you started it." Zane looks over to the side.
"See?" I almost yell, trying to prove my point.
"I can't see, I'm half blind." He says, like it's the most obvious thing in the world.
"You're half blind?" I say, dumbfounded.
A few moments pass, while Zane only brings his palm to his face, sounding a small smap.
"Of course I am, why do you think I always have my hair over my eye? There's no actual use my eye can provide." He shifts, then mumbles, looking to the side, "other than look ugly because of that stupid scar."
"Oooh, I wanna see!" I say.
"What, my eye?"
I simply nod.
"Um, I dunno. Only my mother has seen it in recent years. I haven't even shown it to Aphmau either." He grabs the tray, once he's done, and places it into the now very hot oven.
"Oh." My spirits drop, knowing if Aphmau hasn't seen it, then I probably won't. I'm not sure if Aphmau still has a stronger bond with him since the kiss. Come to think of Aphmau, has Zane told her about the kiss? I haven't even told Dante, because both Zane and I agreed that we wouldn't tell anyone until... something, I don't actually fully know. Until we're dating? Until we agree that we should tell people?
I should ask him about that.
"So, uh, you know how about the kiss, we agreed not to tell anyone?" I ask, my voice pretty small because I don't exactly know how to word the question.
Zane takes it the wrong way and asks, "You told someone, didn't you?"
"No, I didn't." I squint my eyes at him, but continue, "But, when will we tell people?"
"Well, I don't really know." His tone dropped, and he uses a more serious voice than before. "Should we even tell them? I suppose we should, but, we're not... y'know, dating or anything. I guess if it slips out, then it slips out. If not, then it'll continue to be our little secret." He smiles, raising his tone back to normal with the ending words.
I nod my head, say a simple, "m'kay," and start talking about some other random thing.
After a while, the cupcakes were done, being nice and toasty. Just before they were finished, though, Zane had started making some icing. This time I didn't help much; I still don't know even find basics of baking, and I don't need to be pressured about putting eggs into the dry ingredients.
"Sorry about telling you off at the eggs. Here," he hands me several small bowls and some food coloring that, miraculously, he found in my kitchen, "you can make as many colors as you want. I made a lot of normal icing so go crazy." He turns and gets the cupcakes out of the oven, after hearing a few beeps coming from it.
Oh he's going to regret giving me this power.
About ten minutes pass, and Zane was a little too occupied on cleaning the kitchen, not seeing the mess I was making. I mixed some primary colors to make more colors, and I fou do myself filling all the bowls with about eleven different colors.
"Travis." Zane says sternly, finally looking at me.
"Yes?" I answer, acting very innocent.
"Why?!" He gestures to the bowls with many shades and tints.
"Why not is the real question." I only hear Zane sigh, and I continue, "We can make rainbow cupcakes!" I pick up the pace and keep making every color necessary: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple. Zane only laughs and then steps forward to help me.
We finish quickly, with two dozen at hand. Now, I know we can't eat them all (I'm not going to even ask if Zane can) so I convinced him to share with the entire neighborhood. At least one to every one of our friends. He huffs, probably not wanting to leave the house, but agrees anyways. I pull him into a hug and kiss his forehead, and walk out the door. He stands there for a bit, and I snicker to myself.
I'm finally getting him to come out of his shell.Word count: 1554
