"Do you smoke?"
She stared at me in shock
As my cheeks heated up.
She reached a hand into her pocket
And pulled out a lighter
And a box of cigarettes.
"Yes."
She spoke timidly,
Like she was afraid
Of a ghost
That I could not see.
"You sound frightened.
Will you ever tell me
Why you were crying?"
She nodded slowly
Putting her items
Back into her pocket.
"You'll find out one day.
One day, you'll see everything.
You'll know who I am
Who I really am
And hopefully you won't judge.
I don't need sympathy
I just need love."
I thought about my reply
In my head
Too afraid to say it.
I needed her
And she needed me.
"Well
I think I maybe
Possibly
Could give you the love
That you so desperately need."
