"Arabella."

She turned her head

To look at me quizzically

And the silhouette of her face

Stood in contrast with the sunset.

"Ashton."

"Why won't you tell me

Why you were crying that day?"

She breathed out slowly

Like exhaling her emotions

And trying to compose herself.

"Because if I told you

You'd think of me differently.

You'd leave me.

I'm a ticking time bomb."

I still remained puzzled at her words

"Why a time bomb?"

She sighed deeply

Rubbing her temples

And pulled her long blonde hair

Into a high ponytail.

"I guess it's time you should know."

I was shocked

And a bit confused

As to why she would choose now to tell me.

"Promise me you won't leave."

"Promise."

She licked her lips

And her eyes stared off

Into the ocean

Where mysteries

Just like herself

Were kept hidden.

"There's a monster inside of me.

And it's eating at my lungs.

It feeds on them

And there's no way to kill it."

I breathed in her metaphor

As she continued to speak.

"I found out about the monster that day

I thought it would never attack me

But it did

And now I'm being eaten alive by it.

I'm dying, Ashton."

I frowned and pulled her in

For a tight embrace.

"You'll never be dead to me.

I'll be your knight in shining armor

Not all knights can kill the monster

But they'll do anything

And everything

To save the princess."
