Eld x Reader

||Promise||
A/N: short
••

"You've been gone for quite awhile."
"I know."
"And you're just going to go again, now, right after?"
"You know I have to. You know it is my duty."

The warmth of the vanilla scented candle radiates throughout the otherwise dark room. The flame flickers back and forth, becoming larger and then repressing as the hurried breaths of the two that sit at the small wooden table leave their mouths.

"You act like your duty is to be killed, Eld!"
Eld slams his hand against the cleansed wood, causing the small structure to shake immensely. The singular candle that separates the two shakes on its small golden metal plate, as two more large drips of its wax hit it.

"Enough of this already. I am not arguing with you tonight. I need to get back to headquarters."
The blonde-headed man raises himself from the table and slips his cape off from the hook near the door.
She raises as well, almost tripping out of her chair.

"You can't!"
"I will." The voice that is used is not one to be reckoned with, not one that should continue speaking due to the intensity of anger that seeps within it.

Tears threaten to fall down at any moment, (name) biting her lip in fear and anxiety and anger, all mixing together within her small being.

She feels a quick hand being brought up to her face, roughly and clumsily wiping the already staining tears.

"I'm sorry, (name). You know I hate doing this. I didn't expect for..."
He looks down at her, watching more tears falling down her face.
He huffs, turning his head away, refusing to finish the sentence.

"For a burden to come along, right?" She gestures to her stomach. "Two burdens, right?"

"You're not a burden, (name) and neither is," he pauses, glancing down at her still small stomach. "The baby." He swallows hard as he finishes the two words, still finding it quite difficult to admit that he is going to become a father.

"It was just never planned. To fall in love with someone, I mean. To fall in love with you."

She continues to look down at their feet.

"Look," Eld sighs and runs a hand through his messily-thrown together hair. "I love you, (name), and I promise to come back and stay." He brings his hand to her stomach while resting his chin on the top of her head. "To stay and continue our family. And be happy and here. With you."

She sniffles a bit, allowing herself to lift Eld's chin off the top of her head and raise her eyes to meet his gaze.

"Promise?"
"I promise."
A small pause threatens the air.
"You can't break your promise, Eld."
"I know."
"Okay."

A few weeks later, she opens the door to her small, quaint home to none other than corporal Levi himself.

"Mr. Ackerman," she address him how she always has. "What brings you here? Where is the rest of your squad? Eld?"

Levi just sighs, very heavily. His pale hand shakily extends out, a small white envelope between his fore and thumb fingers.

"Take this."

Without another word, the envelope is given to her and Levi simply walks away.
(Name) closes the door, and walks to the small wooden table Eld and her had sat at, not too long ago.
She opens it hesitantly with shaking fingers. In it is a small letter. She immediately recognizes the handwriting as Eld's.

It reads,

"To My Beloved,

I'm sorry, but I could not keep the promise. I love you."
