Sophia

Along with the other two freshmen couples in formal tuxes and ballroom dresses, Lucas and I stepped to our blocking positions, just across the panel of stoic-faced judges.

In an instant, my mind flew to the video I had watched on repeat: "Sway Pussycat Dolls. Cha-Cha Choreography by Peny."

Fastening my brown eyes for a split second, I reined in all my nerves, my insecurities, my fear of slipping up and making any mistakes.

When I opened my eyes, I was already in front of Lucas, only a few inches separating us.

A long hush of silence fell over the entire gymnasium.

And then the music played through the air.

My lips felt moist. Nevertheless, I found myself smirking at my black-haired partner, who nodded.

We began to dance to the alluring rhythm of "Sway" by The Pussycat Dolls.

How I was managing to keep a straight, confident face while dancing sexily, I'll never understand.

"When marimba rhythms start to play.. dance with me.. make me sway.."

The whole situation felt surreal, like a dream I never wanted to wake up from.

Lucas holding my right hand, his grip firm, our fingers intertwined as we danced vigorously.

Like a lazy ocean hugs the shore.. hold me close.. sway me more..

He lifted my hand over my head and twirled me around twice like a princess.

"You're doing great," whispered my partner as I laid my hand on his arm.

"You too," I murmured to him, and all too soon,we pulled away, quickly engaged in the one-two-three-four step by step, my white heels clicking and clacking against the hardwood floor.

"Like a flower bending in the breeze.. bend with me.. sway with ease.."

"When we dance you have a way with me.. stay with me.. sway with me.."

"Sophia, have you ever bore a grudge on someone?" Lucas asked while we danced.

A crease formed between my brows. "You've been asking a lot of odd queries tonight."

He took my hand, stretched me out, then we twirled around until we switched places.

"Other dancers may be on the floor..dear, but my eyes will see only you.."

"Just humor me, please."

"Only you have that magic technique.. when we sway I go weak.. I feel so weak!"

We held out both arms from side to side the very second that last line was fiercely sung.

Here comes my part.

Lucas continued to stretch his arms out as if someone was taking his measurements.

I, on the other hand, swayed my hips softly while seductively sinking downwards, still on my feet.

The crowd erupted in a rambunctious uproar, catcalling, hooting, clapping, taking pics and videos.

"Of course I've carried grudges," I said, my face frowning, my hand trailing on his chest as I danced in front of him like a temptress. "But I've never hated anyone. It's not in my nature."

I stood up, and Lucas placed his right hand on my back, my left hand resting on his right arm while his left hand was safely tucked into my right hand.
