Sometimes Lover,

Things haven't been so great since the move.  I don't know what's going on with u but not yet have u been home a full day since I got here.  It's been almost 2 weeks.

I mean, I enjoy when u ARE here.  But I don't understand why u can't keep still 4 more than 2 hours!  U're studio addiction is real.  Denial is the first step to acceptance.

I get that u need 2 work but all I'm asking for is ONE night alone with u.  One FULL night.  Not an hour of pleasure or 'hold me til I fall asleep then sneak off.'  For once I would like to NOT wake up alone.  Is that so much to ask for???

Maybe I rely 2 heavily on dreams.  I imagined so much more.  I imagined we'd have an epic sleepover the first night.  Wake up to strawberry pancakes the next morning.  And if lucky, do it all over again?

Hopefully we can break in this new bed soon...

Thursday/October 31, 1991/Chanhassen, MN

Every Halloween I'd volunteer at the YMCA to pass out candy to the trick-or-treaters wandering the neighborhood.  All the little ghosts, witches and goblins.  I remember quite a few times I even met The Kid.  He was literally this little kid with curls, a painted stash and purple trench coat over white ruffles.  No matter what was going on in my life, there was always a YMCA to lift my spirits and celebrate the fun holiday.  But not this year.  Prince locked me in Studio B at the piano.

After learning that I rearranged quite a few of his songs (only about 20), he wanted me to record all of them.  When Doves Cry was his favorite, and he talked about me performing it one day at "our" show.  About how my music could silent an arena of thousands.  "Spellbinding."

I was still mad at him.  But of course, I just sucked it up and went to work.

In Paisley Park, there was a no unauthorized camera rule.  So when Prince told me someone named Jerry would be filming my session, I was surprised.  He told me to pretend he's not there.  When I asked why the company, Prince answered, "I don't know yet."

While laying down I Would Die 4 U, he came in to visit with a large bowl full of candy.  Printed on the glass were orange pumpkins and black bats.  This was his compromise.
