—Arzaya
"I'm so full," I say, sitting next to my boyfriend as we set a blanket on the ground for us to lay on. "Do you think I'm gaining lots lately?"
He pats the ground and pulls me on his chest, letting us stare at clear, starry Thanksgiving night. Lying like this with him is something I have been missing for the past few months and I'm so glad that he got a chance to come home for a few weeks to celebrate the holidays with just his and my family.
"Quite," he says, turning to me with a cheesy smile.
I hit his chest lightly. "So you think I'm ugly?"
"When did I ever say you were?" he quickly denies. "Arzaya and ugly don't come in the same sentence. My baby a bad one."
Giggling, I prop my elbows to stare at him better. He's gained more facial hair than the bare face he had in high school, but he still has the same baby face that I love.
"I really missed you," I tell him, seriously. "It's not the same being in school and not having you around. And even more, our own schedules keep clashing. When I get free time to call you, you're in practice and–"
"Baby," he cut off, pecking my lips. "We're managing, right? We're still doing well despite the lack of time together."
I sigh. "I know, I know. But I just want you to know that I support you with your dreams. I know you're training really hard at Davidson and this will all pay off when you play for the NBA soon."
He takes my hand and kisses it. "Thank you, babe. That means a lot. You know I always support your goals too and the efforts you do to reach them. See? Long distance really can't affect us if we know we'll always fall back to one another."
He's right. It's been just a few months anyway. Sure, we got used to spending 24/7 together back in high school but now we just talk 2 hours a day, sometimes none. But that's okay, because it doesn't mean he's leaving anywhere. We're still together no matter how far.
I lie back down on his arm and look straight at the glimmering night sky. Watching the stars has always been something I enjoyed especially next to Stephen.
"How's Stanford?" he asks. "Did you make any friends?"
"I meet people here and there, but it's never anything like Shay or my sons. We kinda just mind our own businesses there. Most people focus on their studies and I guess that's an environment I like. I haven't really explored much, though. They say night life is pretty fun."
I feel him nodding his head as I talk. "You should bring me there. See what it's like walking around the campus. See how many guys stare at my girlfriend every day."
I roll my eyes playfully. "Hardly anyone pays attention to me, so you're safe."
"Doubt!"
"Excuse me," I rebut, "Look at you, Mr. Famous. How's Davidson? I bet all the girls started swarming you there."
He laughs and kisses my temple in return. "Nothing to worry, baby. I know who I belong to. I'm too busy focusing on building my game to even notice others."
I exhale in satisfaction. Although at the back of my mind, I know for a fact that he's gaining lots of female attention there but I trust his loyalty.
I hug him tighter and listen to his heartbeat as I try to count the stars above me. Crazy how this moment is so fleeting that it feels like a dream. Next thing we know, he's flying across the country again.
