Day

June and I have just gotten out of school. She has been driving me to and from school for a while. I can finally drive normal again as of yesterday.

"Hey Junebug." I say as she approaches my car.

"Day, I told you not to call me that. That's my brother and my thing. Please respect it."

"I'm sorry." I say taking her hand and kissing her forehead.

"It's okay. It's just something he told me my parents used to call me. I never remembered them calling me that but it means so much to him because of it."

"I understand completely. Guess what? I can drive again."

"Day-" she pauses. "I don't know."

"I do. It'll be great. And you know the first thing I wanna do?" I whisper to her as she leans against my car.

"What?" She asks, a little flustered.

"I want to drive all the way out of the city with my girlfriend and get lost somewhere."

"Dayyyy." She says. "Why do you insist on being such a distraction to me?"

"Because I love you." She looks me in the eyes and leans in to kiss me before ducking away and hopping in the passenger seat.

"Not even going to let me open the door for you?" I ask getting into my car.

"Nope." She says. "I don't want to talk to you right now."

I start the car and we drive out of town.

"June, you want to drive now that we're out of the heavy traffic?" I ask. She shrugs.

"Sure." I park the car and begin to switch spots with her. I grab her by the waist when we meet at the back of the car and pull her into a kiss.

"You look so cool." She says pulling back and pressing her forehead to mine.

"I love you too." I say. She is referencing a book we read together in class.

"Don't crash my car June." I say.

"This car is no Ferrari." She says.

"You want me to steal my parents' Ferrari?" I ask.

"No, but maybe steal their money and buy a camper. I've always wanted to do that."

"You've always wanted to steal from my parents? Not really any need for that. We could camp out inside my car." I say jokingly.

"Of course not! I just have always wanted to camp, and that's not the same."

"Then looks like we need to leave California because most the campers here are used by the homeless."

"Maybe we will leave Cali." She says smiling. She jumps in the driver's seat and I walk around to mine.

Her brother is on a work trip this week. Doesn't get back for a few more days. It's a Friday. We could.

"Well it's a good thing I've been driving toward the state line for three hours now. How do you feel about Arizona?" I ask.

"Daniel! It hasn't been three hours!" She looks to her watch. "Oh my gosh. Day I'm in so much trouble."

"It'll be fine. Come on. Let's live on the edge." She lets out a long breath.

"You're lucky I love you Daniel Altan."

I smile. I am well aware of that. She starts us off in the same direction we'd been going and in another fifty minutes we reach a sign that says 'Welcome to Arizona.'
