I watched him climb into a cab, and it was too late. The car sped off as I called out his name. The pouring rain that drenched me in a matter of seconds drowned out my words. There wasn't another cab in sight. Nothing like New York. I couldn't even follow him.

I hurried inside. The guy at the front desk looked at me as if I were a madwoman dripping messily over the counter, but I didn't care.

"That man who got in the cab a minute ago... What room is he in?"

"We don't give out that kind of information, but in this case, it doesn't much matter. He's checked out."

"Checked out?" I felt as if a medicine ball had hit me in the stomach.

He nodded, then turned to chitchat with his haughty-browed colleagues.

It was over. Will was gone. Destiny said I would see him again, and I guess, technically, I had seen him. Tears filled my eyes and my emotions took over. The room seemed to spin. I had to get out of here. I had to leave this hotel, with its strange nightly happenings and dreary, dim days that all ran together. The first part of our exhibit would be over early next week. Gwen could handle it alone. She only acted as if she needed me to boost my pitiful sense of self. I ran blindly for the elevator. I had to pack, change tickets, do anything I could to leave and forget.
