May 27, night

My hands shook as I held the phone and listened to Will's soft voice on the other end of the line.

"Where are you?" Those had been my first words.

"New York... where you should be too. With me. Did you get my note?"

I could tell he was half smiling, and I couldn't help but do the same.

"Yes, I did."

He could hear my smile through those three little words. We both knew he was winning at this game, but something still forced me to hold out. What was I really trying to accomplish? I had asked myself the question over and over. But I still hadn't come up with a meaningful answer. Other than the fact that I was scared to truly enter this story, to become a participant. In my mind, I was still a witness, too terrified to cross the line.

"Kat, it's time to make a decision," he said. Again, the gentle, soothing voice. "Destiny is gone... and so is Audrey."

"You did know her..."

"Yes, almost as well as I knew Destiny."

"Do you think she was murdered?"

"I don't know. That's not for us to answer. I'm afraid you're going too far, Kat."

"What do you mean?" A sudden spark of annoyance came to life within me.

"Destiny helped bring us together. Period. There's no reason to ask yourself questions about her friends, family, parties and way of life. None of that has anything to do with us."

"How can you be so sure?" I snapped.

"She would have told me. And I would have had an idea about it on my own."

"Maybe she didn't know her best friend was going to be murdered. She wasn't even able to predict her own brother's death after all!"

Will drew in a breath. Silence.

"It's not infallible, Kat."

"What isn't?"

"When you're a medium, it doesn't mean that you can forecast the future one hundred percent of the time. There are limitations. Some things are meant to be, and some things aren't."

"Do you mean the information about Gabriel and Audrey was withheld from her? By... well, by whoever?"

"The information wasn't available," he said, correcting me. "There's nothing more to it. Destiny understood the limitations. And I understand them too."

"Sam doesn't?"

"No, he doesn't."

Silence as I thought back to my original question: Why was it time to make a decision after the deaths of Destiny and Audrey?

"Now that they're gone, there's nothing else for us to learn about our past or future, Kat," he said, as if reading my mind. "It's up to us to move forward. We don't have a crutch of sorts, helping us advance in one direction or another."

"Is that what Destiny was for you?"

"Yes, for me and many others."

"I have this article to finish," I said weakly.

"You're almost done, and that's why you've had time to delve into these new developments."

I'd forgotten he had a sixth sense too.

"Why is everyone willing to turn their backs on this story?" I asked.

"Because the 'everyone' you're referring to understands this is one of those cases that involves powerful people who have control beyond what you could imagine. Their issues have nothing to do with you, and it should stay that way."

His comments echoed what Charlotte had told me about the two families, but they only enticed me to find out more.

"I need some time, Will," I said, trying to sound detached.

"Time is running out."

"What do you mean?"

"If you wait too long, you'll find out on your own."

Then stiff, uncomfortable good-byes. Both of us seemingly disappointed, regretful.
