My foot tapped rhythmically against the tiled floor. I breathed in the sweet smell of baking desserts, the rich scent of coffee and melting chocolate. I was perfectly content. Perhaps most people wouldn't have thought spending Christmas Eve alone in a small Cafe off of 42nd street was an ideal situation, but for me, it was perfect.

I stuffed a cookie into my mouth and took the last sip of my hot chocolate, savouring the decadent taste, the whipped cream and marshmallows sticking to my lips.

Snow fell fast outside. Thick, white, fluffy flakes. They stuck on the glass window, creating shimmering patters with the setting sun.

The bell above the door jingled as someone walked in. I glanced up and nearly choked on my cookie.

Golden blonde curls and a bright smile filled my vision, and everything else turned blurry. Snowflakes were stuck in her hair, her cheeks were rosy from the cold.

She began to walk towards the counter, turning her back on me, she hadn't seen me. I found myself rising slowly, almost subconsciously. My hands grew clammy and I felt heat rise to my cheeks.

I surged across the room, then hesitated. My hand hovered above her shoulder. I bit my lip, and let my fingertips fall gently onto her arm.

She turned around quickly, shaking my hand off her.

"Um. Who are..." her voice trailed off and her stormy grey eyes widened.

"Annabeth" I said, a smile slowly spreading onto my lips.

Her hand covered her mouth, "Percy?"

I nodded, scratching the back of my neck nervously and feeling my eyes crinkle up with a smile, "I-I can't believe it's you."

I was cut off by a massive hug. Her arms wrapped around me and she snuggled against my neck. Minutes passed before we finally pulled apart.

She started to laugh, her fingers wiping away a few tears that slipped down her cheeks.

I was breathing deeply, unable to control my happiness. "I'm twenty two years old and you still give me butterflies." I smirked, feeling my own eyes grow slightly misty.

"I've missed you so much, Seaweed Brain" Annabeth sniffled, "I've missed you so much."

I rolled my eyes affectionately, "Don't you go and get all sappy on me now."

Annabeth laughed through the tears. The sound was perfectly sweet and it made my heart soar. I hadn't heard that laugh since I was 14 years old.

I pulled her close against me once again. I gently leaned down, tucking her hair behind her ear and locking eyes with her.

"But just for the record, I missed you too, Wise Girl."

...

Annabeth sat down at a small table close to the front of the cafe and waited patiently while I ordered our drinks.

"Two hot chocolates, please" I said to the cashier, "Extra whipped cream. Extra marshmallows."

I leaned against the counter and pulled out my wallet, waiting for her to prepare the drinks.

"Is she your girlfriend? I'm guessing you two haven't seen each other in a while?" The cashier winked as she readied our drinks.

I coughed, surprise filling my eyes, "Oh... oh no! She's not my girlfriend... No... Haha. No."

The cashier raised her eyebrows at me, "Hmmm?"

I frowned slightly, understanding that she wanted an explanation. "Uh. She was my best friend. I-I used to like her, and she used to like me too... I haven't seen her in forever though. She moved back to California for Freshman year. It's been ages...I never stopped waiting for her to come back home."
