The unravelling

"No James, I will not wash my mouth out with soap."

"But you have gross, unwelcome saliva in your mouth!" James teased, holding out a bar of soap to me.

I pushed his arm away and groaned, "It wasn't unwelcome exactly, just unexpected."

When Oliver and I had broken our kiss apart the night before, I looked away to see James, Sirius, Peter and Remus gawking at us. We'd walked home without much talk of the matter after celebrating the new year for a while, but I had been teased relentlessly since we had woken up this morning. If you are a girl who prefers the company of boys, or if you have brothers, you will know what this is like.

"So what, you're just going to go about kissing random boys now, are you?" Sirius asked snidely.

"Oliver isn't a random boy, and for your information, he kissed me. Not that it's any of yours business." I retorted, though I couldn't help but feeling guilty for the scowl that contorted Sirius' face.

"Hey, maybe they'll let you on the quidditch team now that you're getting it on with the captain." Peter joked.

I didn't laugh. None of the others did either. Sometimes it seemed he tried so hard to be funny that he just went places he shouldn't.

"I think we should let her be," Remus said slowly. I looked around at him to smile appreciatively at him, but then he went on. "She probably needs some peace around her to dream about Oooliver." He cooed.

I groaned and grunted, grabbing a handful of crisps out of the bowl on the living room table where we were playing monopoly.

"I honestly don't see why, though. I mean look at you, your legs spread out like a man, crisps spilling out of your mouth and all your caveman grunting. As a quidditch captain, he could do much better than this half-troll." James said, gesturing to me.

I looked down at my legs, which were indeed spread wide apart with some crisp remnants sprinkled about. Instead of taking offense, I grinned at him, mouth still full of food and the whole room groaned in distaste.

I rolled the dice and got a seven. "Faen forpult drittspill kan faen meg dra til helvette." I roared as I landed on Sirius' expensive hotels. I threw what I had left of money at him and flicked my player off the board. "I'm bankrupt. I give up. Stupid game."

"Sore loser." Remus commented.

"And you didn't pay me enough for your night with me at the hotel." Sirius said luridly.

"I didn't think enough of your services in the sheets." I said flatly and left the room to go paint amidst laughter among the boys.

Some hours later I went down again; it was dinner. We'd be going back to school tomorrow and the thought of it annoyed me, though I didn't know why. Bad teachers and immature students?

"Chin up, Ollie. What if the wind turned now and your pretty face was stuck with that scowl for the rest of your life, dear." Euphemia rested her had on my back and led me through to the dining room.

"Well, we are inside so chances of us noticing a change of the wind are unlikely." I sulked.

"All the same, smile and the world smiles back."

I knew she was right, being in a foul mood wasn't going to do me any good but I still didn't feel like being cheerful.

"I promise to smile once we've finished dinner." I said, and she laughed.

That evening, I was the last to go to bed. After I'd finished brushing my teeth I laid down in my bed which was still next to Sirius'. We had always talked a little every night before going to sleep, but now his back was turned to me. He was pretending to sleep. I could tell.

I couldn't help but feel as though everything had just gone wrong.

The next morning I got up early and pranced about outside as usual, getting the exercise I so sorely hated and loved at the same time, then went up to pack, and had already eaten breakfast before the others had even woken up. Once the others all had arisen and started rushing about in panic, I could drink my tea and read my book, enjoying how stressed out everyone else was. Perhaps I had sadistic tendencies.

Once everything was packed and in order, we used the Floo system to travel to Hogwarts, where McGonagall was waiting to greet us. We left the luggage we had brought with us on our holiday there to be carried up by the house elves. James quickly declared that we would be having a piggy back race up to the dormitories and that Remus would be judge, before commanding me to jump on his back, starting to run before I'd even lodged myself on him properly. Sirius and Peter couldn't even make out proper complaints in the rush, and Remus sprinted lightly past us to get there first.

Once we entered the common room, my stomach dropped. Oliver was there.

"No time for flirting, Ollie. Nor you, Ollie. We are on a quest!" James yelled half choked by exhaustion as he turned to climb up the stairs, his grip on me still firm. I was relieved.

Behind us we could hear Sirius and Peter topple through portrait hole. "You actually have to hold on to me, Wormtail, you can't just lie on top of me like a sack."

We burst through the dormitory door and James tossed me onto the nearest bed, whooping and yelling.

Remus was sitting on his bed, no sign of exhaustion on him.

Some moments later Sirius and Peter crashed through the door, swearing and heaving.

"Aha! We hadn't needed a judge at all, for it was a clear win!" James exclaimed, now jumping from bed to bed.

"You started before we did, and Peter wouldn't hold onto me properly so he fell off all the time, and you're taller than I am, which means you have longer legs. And Ollie's basically a child whereas Peter... Well Peter's a growing boy." Sirius huffed, blowing his hair out of his eyes.

Seeing him like this, annoyed and sweaty, did something to me. "Sore loser." I said, and when he looked me in the eyes, it felt like all my insides had turned to dust. His eyes were black, not grey, not the green they could sometimes be, but black. I couldn't look away.

A/N

I hope you're all doing well.

It feels an awful lot like the world is coming to an end, as though Ragnarok is on it's way.

I'm stuck at home alone for the next three weeks and can't see anyone so I thought it would be a good idea to write some more.

I promise I'll try.

Lots of love,
